We are seeking a passionate and resilient Design and Technology Teacher to join our specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) independent school. This is a rewarding opportunity to work with small class sizes, allowing you to build strong relationships and make a meaningful impact on students who require additional support. You will deliver engaging and practical DT lessons tailored to individual needs, helping pupils develop confidence, skills, and positive behaviours for learning.

Curriculum & Teaching Focus

  • Devise and deliver a practical and engaging Design and Technology curriculum tailored to SEMH learners
  • Teach general woodwork skills including safe use of tools and machinery
  • Introduce and develop CAD (Computer-Aided Design) skills
  • Support students working towards vocational qualifications such as BTEC
  • Embed health and safety, workshop discipline, and real-world employability skills
  • Differentiating curriculum to meet EHCP targets and individual learning needs

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver high-quality Design and Technology lessons across a wide range of abilities from Yr 7 to Post 16
  • Adapt teaching to meet a range of SEMH needs and learning abilities
  • Manage and support challenging behaviour using positive strategies
  • Create a safe, structured and supportive learning environment
  • Monitor progress and contribute to EHCP targets and reviews
  • Work collaboratively with pastoral teams, SEN staff, and external professionals
  • Use school systems such as CPOMS (safeguarding), SIMS/Arbor (MIS), and behaviour tracking systems
  • Promote students’ personal development, resilience, and independence
  • Adhere to health and safety, safeguarding and other relevant policies and procedures for your role at all times

Essential Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
  • Experience teaching Design and Technology in a secondary setting
  • Appropriate qualifications in Maths and English to ensure we can deliver cross curricula learning with lead colleagues
  • Strong understanding of SEMH needs and behaviour management strategies
  • Experience working with students with additional needs (SEN/SEMH/PRU settings desirable)
  • Experience of creating and maintaining safe learning environments
  • Ability to build positive relationships and remain calm under pressure
  • Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive education

Desirable

  • Experience in an SEMH, SEN or alternative provision setting
  • Specialism in areas such as woodwork, engineering, or product design
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed or restorative approaches
  • Familiarity with school systems such as CPOMS, SIMS or Arbor is desirable

Pay: £16,500.00-£19,000.00 per year
