About the Role
As the Digital Editor, you will be responsible for managing the delivery of BBC Countryfile's digital content suite and will need to ensure that strategy and best practice are followed to help continue the digital growth of this award-winning brand. The Digital Editor will ensure content across our BBC Countryfile website is current and relevant to issues that form part of the ever-changing national and international conversation around wildlife and the countryside. The Digital Editor will use analytics tools to grow the website's traffic and predict trends and deliver articles in anticipation of these trends. Guided by data and analytics, the Digital Editor will decide what stories will be the most engaging and should be covered from week to week, month to month. They will deliver and upload news and features around these moments, whether that is by writing the content or via commissioning. Together with the help of the Managing Editor, they will ensure the team is generating content that will work online and on Apple News throughout the year. This role requires strong time management and organisational skills to ensure all digital channels and platforms are continually updated. In addition, the Digital Editor will support the team in creating compelling digital content across multiple, diverse platforms including the website, Apple News and social media.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Group Digital Lead to develop and implement a strategy that will drive digital traffic across the website, Apple News and MSN.
- Work with the Managing Editor to ensure a portion of content is commissioned specifically with SEO in mind.
- Plan, ideate and write high‑performing, online‑exclusive articles with outlets including Apple News and Google Discover in mind.
- Adapt and upload print content for online, and repurpose archive material into fresh digital features, as well as optimising existing content.
- Continuously update and manage, and develop strategy for the brand's social channels, including Instagram and Facebook.
- Create and approve the brand's newsletters.
- Evaluate our digital channels' performance against key performance indicators and report on stats on a monthly basis.
- Keep up with Discover, SEO and other digital platforms best practice to optimise new and existing content and use analytic tools to identify emerging trends and content gaps.
- Liaise and collaborate with other internal departments to progress brand initiatives.
- Liaise with the tech team where necessary, and coach team members about new and developing technology and digital processes.
Qualifications
- A proven track record in producing and managing digital content channels for a media brand and increasing traffic.
- An experienced writer who can produce engaging original content and adapt existing material into online content.
- A real gift for writing headlines and an understanding of which online headlines work, and how they differ across digital platforms.
- A very keen eye for accuracy and detail.
- Experience and understanding of managing social media channels and newsletters.
- A proactive and highly organised individual who can manage a rolling content calendar and busy schedule of deadlines.
- Demonstrable communication skills and a keen collaborator.
- Analytical mindset – recognises and responds to Google trends, experience providing reporting and feedback on SEO.
