Homework Helper

The Homework Helper role responds to an identified need within some families, where English is not the home language. Parents may require additional support to help their school age children in their education. This is a new development in our work and the Homework Helper role may take two forms:

  • Volunteering within specific after school homework clubs where there are enough children to enable a small group approach.
  • Volunteering to support individual children and families with homework within school or community venues.

Experience required:

  • Patience, understanding and empathy for learners for whom English is not their first language.
  • Reasonable grasp of English, Maths and other primary school subjects (or specific knowledge in secondary school subjects, as appropriate).
  • Strong communication skills and determination/problem solving approach.
  • Reliability, commitment and passion for supporting learning.
  • Respectful of the different needs and cultures of individuals.
  • Experience of teaching, educational support.

Volunteers (aged 11-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
