The Ax:son Johnson Institute for Statecraft and Diplomacy (AJI) is seeking a highly organised, motivated individual to join our team as a Communications and Events Coordinator. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in event organisation coupled with exceptional organisational and communication skills. This is an excellent opportunity to gain insight into an exciting and ambitious international institute focused on statecraft, diplomacy, and geopolitics with a historical perspective.

AJI is a global partnership of scholars, policy practitioners, and rising voices who stand at the intersection of academic inquiry and public engagement in international politics.

Role and Responsibilities:

The Communications and Events Coordinator will report to the two Assistant Directors of AJI and the Project Manager. The position is a full-time role, with an average working week of 40 hours, based at AJI’s London offices. The successful candidate will have two main strands of responsibilities:

  • Managing AJI’s internal and external communications, which includes:
  • Producing content and communicating AJI’s activities on all channels, including social media, the Institute’s website, and external media.
  • Engaging with AJI’s partner centres and promoting centre activities and events.
  • Supporting the AJI team in building and maintaining an Alumni Network, with the aim of sharing AJI activities, publications, and job opportunities with members of the Network.
  • Researching, planning, and delivering scholarly events of the highest quality, including seminars, roundtable discussions, and conferences for high-profile international scholars, experts, and policymakers, which includes:
  • Developing, planning, and executing AJI’s events.
  • Sourcing and managing the required internal and third-party products and services to secure event delivery, including catering, transport, and accommodations.
  • Ensuring high-quality standards in all published and printed event materials, including programmes and event descriptions.
  • Conducting background research for events and speaker selection.

In addition to the above, the Communications and Events Coordinator may be asked to perform any other tasks reasonably expected within the scope and grade of the role. This role requires regular travel across the United Kingdom and Europe to attend AJI’s events, and may also involve travel to the United States in the future. This role will provide an excellent opportunity for ambitious candidates to develop, grow and establish a direction for their careers.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and/or 1–2 years of relevant experience in the responsibilities of the role. Relevant degrees might include History, Political Science, International Relations, Communications, and Journalism.
  • Proven track record of project management both in teams and independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Proficiency in other European languages is considered a merit.
  • Experience in working with social media, particularly LinkedIn and Twitter/X.
  • High proficiency in WordPress and Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel.
  • Experience within academia, government, or NGOs is considered a merit.

About the Ax:son Johnson Institute for Statecraft and Diplomacy:

AJI is part of the Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnson Foundation for Public Benefit. The foundation is devoted to funding and supporting scholarly research, particularly the advancement of interdisciplinary debate in the humanities and social sciences in Sweden and internationally. To this end, AJI supports the research of emerging scholars, convenes dialogues between policymakers and leading foreign policy analysts on pressing strategic issues, and fosters a growing intellectual community that spans the Atlantic. AJI is partnered with four research centres at leading universities: the Centre for Geopolitics at the University of Cambridge, the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, the Centre for Statecraft and National Security at King’s College London, and the Center for Statecraft and Strategic Communication at the Stockholm School of Economics.

The successful candidate will join a small team at the centre of this collaboration, organising academic conferences, policy roundtables, and side events at international security conferences. They will have the opportunity to work with leading academics and representatives at the highest levels of government and international organisations.
