This is the job. The AA has an enviable set of data assets and ‘Data as our new Superpower’ is a transformation journey our organisation is on with investment in progress to completely modernise our data estate and tools. As a business, we are also investing in a new AI Centre of Excellence and this role will be pivotal in the enablement of AI capability. As a Data Scientist, you will be part of the AA’s central Data team delivering data science algorithms and solutions for business users. Collaborating with analysts, BI developers, engineers and our AI Centre of Excellence, you will develop and deploy data science capabilities that drive incremental revenue, improve customer experience, and optimise business performance.
The problems you will work on may be highly varied spanning areas like forecasting, optimisation and modernisation of our roadside operation and deployment; commercial product upsell and cross-sell; churn risk and customer lifetime value; marketing segmentation and personalisation etc. Your work will support the data science and machine learning operations (ML Ops) vision and contribute to the development of scalable data products, fully deployable across a variety of systems and channels to support the AA’s customers and optimise business operations.
What will I be doing?
- Build and deploy statistical models to support product development, demand forecasting and value driver analysis utilizing a variety of modelling and machine learning techniques where appropriate.
- Interpret and solve high-value business problems using data mining, models, and technology-based algorithmic solutions (e.g., RPA, generative AI and LLM).
- Collaborate with architecture and engineering teams to design and embed algorithms that will work into AA platforms and products.
- Conduct analysis to uncover trends, evaluate scenarios, and assess risks.
- Work closely with the wider Data team to onboard and explore new sources of data relevant for work delivery.
- Have good knowledge of the data and business processes within the business domain you are working with, understanding the data lineage and ensuring the use of the data is appropriate and has integrity.
- Clearly communicate outputs through presentations, workshops and conversations with key stakeholders.
- Maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, peers and SMEs.
- Responsible for the quality of outputs and products delivered in a timely manner.
- Adhere to relevant published frameworks, including architectural principles and patterns, release processes and peer review.
- Support the continuous improvement culture in the team.
- Support the development of feature stores and data pipelines.
- Maintain professional competence and keep up to date with major developments in the relating business area and data science techniques as part of a continuous learning culture.
- Ensure data integrity and relevance in all modelling and reporting activities.
- Maintain awareness of GDPR and data governance standards.
What do I need?
- Advanced analytical skills including the ability to apply a range of analytics, visualisation and data science techniques.
- Proficiency in Python, SQL, and statistical modelling techniques.
- Experience with machine learning algorithms and data science tools.
- Can structure large ill-defined business problems into a clear and concise set of issues.
- Good communication skills; comfortable presenting & engaging groups of senior clients.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships across teams and departments.
- Writes efficient and well-structured SQL and can prototype new metrics.
- Familiarity with Databricks, Unity Catalog, and agile delivery tools (e.g., GIT, JIRA).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; including advanced Excel.
- Understanding of GDPR and data governance.
- Experience in operational research and business modelling is a plus.
Education & Qualifications
- Numerate degree with a large amount of content covering advanced analytics, data science and/or operational research, or highly relevant experience.
