The Austin Company is a multidisciplinary, design and construction management company, primarily focused on the design and construction of technically complex scientific, research and manufacturing facilities. Clients include Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology Production and Research Companies, Government Research Agencies, Universities, and firms within the Manufacturing and Process Industries.

We are looking to hire a dynamic and experienced Financial Accountant to support our Accounts Department.

PRINCIPAL FUNCTION:

To support the Financial Controller in day-to-day accounting matters so that commitments to clients, subcontractors, tax authorities, auditors and colleagues are completed on time and to the required standard. This duty applies to the parent company and active subsidiaries.

NATURE & SCOPE:

The Financial Accountant will, after a period of on-the-job training, be expected to handle all the company’s bookkeeping; process invoices, journal vouchers, receipts, payments and travel expenses; input all such documents to the accounting system.

On a monthly basis, they will extract a Trial Balance and assist with the preparation of management accounts including profit taking on contracts, the completion of Profit and Loss Accounts and Balance Sheets. Periodic cash forecasts will also be necessary.

Engineering and Construction projects are the company’s business and Project Accounting is a major function. The Financial Accountant will be involved to a greater or lesser degree in this activity depending on the needs of the department.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • 10 years’ professional experience within the UK
  • AAT Qualified or equivalent or Part Qualified ACA/ ACCA/ CIMA to AAT level at least

Construction industry experience and contractual knowledge would be an advantage.

The Financial Accountant may be required to deal with company’s funds, therefore honesty and an absence of criminal convictions are essential characteristics demanded by the position.

Communication skills are important as there will be a need for contact with clients, subcontractors and suppliers as well as liaison with various departments within the company.

The Financial Accountant should be able to cope with deadlines of different types which have to be met, and the work may be demanding.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Record and report financial information to provide timely and accurate data. Undertake all accounting to trial balance stage at least and assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts, including Balance Sheets, Profit and Loss accounts and supporting schedules.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly and weekly payrolls, liaise with and report to HMRC and ensure that salaries, pensions, income taxes and national insurance are paid by due deadlines.
  • Compile sales and purchase invoices, journal vouchers and travel expense documents and input all items into the company systems. Extract VAT amounts from these documents and ensure they are correctly coded.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and subsidiary ledgers to nominal accounts on a monthly basis and present to Chief Accountant or Financial Controller for approval. Maintain records in readily accessible form.
  • If required, undertake project accounting duties including the preparation of invoices to customers, liaise with other departments in the approval of payments to subcontractors and suppliers, compile project cost statements and man-hour schedules.
  • Collect and process weekly timesheets.
  • Periodically, as and when required, assist with or prepare cash and profit forecasts for individual companies or projects.
  • Help in the preparation of VAT returns when required.
  • Become familiar with and compel adherence with CIS scheme.
  • Maintain and update pension, private medical, PHI, SSP and insurance (Life & Company) requirements and record in accordance with Company Policy.
  • Provide assistance with any other duties if requested to do so.

Please note that, in line with our role requirements, only candidates with a minimum of 10 years’ professional experience within the UK will be considered.
