Aurora Chaldon School is pleased to have recently opened a brand new SEND Secondary School in September 2025 in Chaldon, Surrey for young people aged 11-16 who require support with social communication, emotional regulation and sensory processing, typically associated with Autism. All our students have access to a broad and exciting curriculum, personalised to meet their needs, interests and passions.
We are looking to recruit a Higher Level Teaching Assistant to join our team at Chaldon School. You will be based at Aurora Chaldon School with a requirement to work out of our satellite site Caterham when required.
The main purpose of the role: The purpose of the Higher Level Teaching Assistant is to support the Class Teacher with all elements of the day-to-day running of the class and to teach whole classes, groups and individual lessons in consultation with the Class Teacher on a regular basis across a range of classes.
Key duties:
- Pupil Welfare and Safeguarding: Take responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils according to the school's policies, including safeguarding and PREVENT. Provide meaningful feedback on pupil behaviour, relationships and attitudes. Monitor pupils' conduct and behaviour throughout the learning process and intervene to resolve complex or challenging issues, keeping records of incidents, health, behaviour etc. as necessary.
- Supporting Teaching and Learning: Lead in the absence of any Class Teachers across the school. Assist the Class Teacher with carrying out the professional duties of a teacher as outlined in the Professional Standards for Teachers. Know and understand the Class Teacher's curriculum planning and plan, prepare and deliver assigned programmes of teaching and learning activities to individuals, small groups and/or classes, modifying and adapting activities as necessary. Provide high quality, challenging and differentiated educational activities and experiences through teaching a broad and balanced curriculum aiming at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning. Develop and implement individual plans for pupils (such as the educational elements in an EHCP), including attendance at, and contribution to, reviews if requested. Duties will vary; you must expect to diversify and lend a hand wherever required.
Successful candidate qualities:
- GCSE Maths and English qualification minimum Grade 4 or equivalent is essential.
- The Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma or equivalent Level 4 qualification or demonstrate equivalent skill level.
- Previous experience of working within a relevant SEND Provision.
- Understanding of the Safeguarding principles and Child Protection procedures.
- Experience of managing a range of approaches to behaviour, including managing behaviours that challenge.
- Experience working within education is advantageous.
- Experience of working within a multi-cultural, inclusive setting.
