Content Operations Associate, Contract (London) at The Athletic

Powered by one of the largest global newsrooms in sports media, The Athletic’s newsroom of 450+ full-time staff delivers in-depth coverage of hundreds of teams across more than 47 North American markets and all 20 Premier League clubs, among others.

About This Role

Working on Content Operations, you will join a successful content production team based in London, UK. You will work under the Senior Video Growth Manager as part of a team focused on content programming, editorial operations, video operations & editing, and social video strategy & implementation.

You will execute video distribution across platforms, primarily videos featuring league highlights and footage. You will participate in initiatives to improve programming based on best practices, such as optimizing video titles, descriptions, hashtags, platform features, community engagement, thumbnail design, callouts, and more.

You will utilize your video editing experience to optimize content for all social platforms. This role covers a breadth of video work including support on paid social, reviewing video clips for editorial or visual errors, and collaboration with teams to get content live on relevant platforms.

The ideal candidate understands how the YouTube algorithm and other platform algorithms (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook) influence content performance and how to edit/publish content to maximize reach. A good understanding of social analytics and ability to explain why a video performed (or did not) is preferred. Passion for sports and a strong grasp of NFL, NBA and NHL language and news cycles is important. Journalism experience or training is a positive but not required. This is a unique position welcoming candidates from all backgrounds who have a passion for social media, storytelling and video content.

This is a fixed-term engagement through 14/9/2026. The role can be hybrid or fully remote for candidates residing in the United Kingdom.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team focused on leveraging video content to drive subscriptions, views and engagement.
  • Edit existing video footage into appropriate social formats.
  • Write social copy, design and create thumbnails, and schedule and publish content.
  • Report on analytics across social platforms with your line manager.
  • Provide feedback to the creative team with suggestions for content improvements.
  • Create and post organic, original content to social platforms.
  • Maintain the community management of each social platform.
  • File and organize all content created by the team.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in media ownership, publishing, platform or agency environments. Sports media is preferred but not required.
  • Advanced social video editing skills with understanding of how a video should perform on social and what edits maximize virality.
  • Good understanding of social analytics and video platform algorithms.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work under supervision with some independent judgment.
