Purpose of the role

Southend United FC is seeking a dynamic First Team Analyst to play a key role in player recruitment and delivering high‑quality performance and opposition analysis to support the first team coaching staff and players. This is a hands‑on role at the heart of the football department, blending tactical acumen with data‑driven insight to impact training, match preparation, recruitment, and in‑game decision‑making. You will be responsible for generating actionable insights through video, data, and tools such as Impect, StatsBomb, Hudl Sportscode, and more.

Key tasks

  • Performance and Match Analysis
    • Produce analytic data for the first team staff and players
    • Work closely with the Head Coach and staff on a daily basis
    • Capture, code and analyse training sessions to support the coaching process and track development
    • Analyse opposition, composing pre‑match reports on upcoming opposition and clips for meetings
    • Attend all home and away games to ensure live analysis is provided and that videos of the games are captured and coded
    • Review games and provide post‑match analysis in preparation for debrief meeting led by the Head Coach
    • Other ad‑hoc tasks required by the Head Coach and staff
  • Recruitment Analysis
    • Contribute to player scouting reports using tools such as Wyscout, Impect and Statsbomb
    • Assist in benchmarking potential signings using a blend of video, data, and tactical fit assessments
    • Collaborate with the Head of Football, Head Coach and recruitment team on profiling targets

Skills / Technology

  • Mac and PC operating systems (all applications)
  • Experience of Hudl, Wyscout, Impect, StatsBomb and other relevant platforms

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience working in a first‑team football environment
  • Strong tactical understanding of the game, able to translate insights into impactful interventions
  • Advanced knowledge of video analysis workflows and coding methodologies
  • Experience with Hudl suite of products (Sportscode etc)
  • Experience with at least one of StatsBomb, Impect, Opta
  • Ability to produce high‑quality visual and written reports under tight deadlines
  • Highly skilled with Keynote or PowerPoint to deliver reports and insights
  • BSc in Sports Performance Analysis or equivalent

Desirable

  • MSc in Sports Performance Analysis or equivalent
  • Background in performance analysis or applied football analytics
  • Experience presenting to players and senior coaches in high‑performance environments
  • Familiarity with data science tools and techniques is a plus but not required

The Candidate

To be successful in this role, you will have previous experience working in an elite footballing environment as a first team analyst. You will have detailed football knowledge and tactical understanding, with the ability to demonstrate how that can be applied in a practical setting. You will be able to demonstrate your findings in a fast‑paced environment to the footballing department and players. Your experience will include analysing individual performance, analysing training sessions and analysing opposition, aligning this within the team setting and wider club philosophy. It is essential that you have a flexible and dedicated approach to work, enabling certain tasks/demands to be conducted during unsociable hours. Being self‑motivated, you are comfortable working independently or within a team. You can work in a high‑pressured environment, meeting tight deadlines whilst maintaining high standards and confidentiality.
