This is the route out of an Architectural practice and into a developer, on the path to Design Manager. You can step into this one straight from an Architectural Technician or Architect role. You already know why you want it. The problem has always been getting in. You either need to know someone on the inside or already have experience in the role with the title. All you need to do here is apply to this job.

You'd be the Design Coordinator on live projects, sitting in the seat that leads to Design Manager in two to three years. A completely different career path than the one you’re on, while using the skills you’ve developed in a comfortable environment. You’d have flexibility but this is mostly office or site based as and when needed. You’d be exposed to all kinds of things day to day though. You’d work more closely with the PMs, QSs, procurement and site teams. There’s no Architecture Director and no Architectural professionals.

What you'd actually be doing:

  • Using Revit and AutoCAD much as you do now.
  • Feeding into the commercial side.
  • Sitting in on cost reviews, value engineering conversations, and decisions that move money around the project.
  • Picking up the clashes and the gaps before they become a problem on site, and chasing information.
  • Making sure what's been drawn is what’s being built with the site teams.

What you'll need:

  • Architectural Technician background with Revit and AutoCAD, both used regularly.
  • Comfortable adapting how you work. Things move fast and wait for nobody in these sorts of roles, processes aren't always written down.
  • Commercial or Residential design background.
