Research Application Manager, Sustainability

The Sustainability mission at The Alan Turing Institute focuses on the safe decarbonisation of transportation networks, manufacturing processes, and critical infrastructure, to create pathways to net-zero. To achieve this, the mission uses data-centric engineering tools, pioneered by researchers at the Turing in partnership with Lloyd's Register Foundation, a global safety charity with a mission to engineer a safer world.

We have three existing themes of focused engineering activity: manufacturing, maritime and critical infrastructure, and a fourth pillar, interpretive technologies, focuses on the interface between engineering and society.

We are recruiting a Research Application Manager who will work across all four of these themes to provide support in the technology development and translation pillar. You will ensure that the research outputs across the sustainability mission are adopted successfully across government, the charity sector and industry. Your role will be to understand the user, develop technical specifications and create demos or proofs of concept that demonstrate the potential for these methods in application.

The postholder will work on strengthening existing stakeholder relationships and identifying new potential users of research outputs. They will develop specifications for these outputs, designing and building software that can meet these specifications.

About You

You will have experience in stakeholder engagement, working with consortium partners, research collaborators, delivery partners, or clients. You will have basic coding skills in at least one programming language and experience leading and developing internal networks. You will be able to design and apply appropriate data gathering and analytical methods for different investigations, producing reports that identify key issues and findings. The ability to recognise and accurately interpret patterns and trends to support evidence-based decision making is essential for this role.

How You Will Make an Impact

• Drive the Institute's efforts to maximise the impact of the Sustainability Mission. Ensure that the outputs of the research process are translated into appropriate real-world implementations and that they are used by stakeholders external to Turing. You will achieve this by engaging with prospective stakeholders, in close collaboration with the researchers and the Partnerships team.
• Catalyse connections and collaboration between users and researchers. This could come in the form of synchronous regular meetings or it could occur asynchronously, for example, through active engagement on distributed communication channels such as Slack and the maintenance of public and private GitHub repositories to documented ongoing work within the projects.
• Work with Turing Communications team to promote achievements and capabilities in a way which is meaningful for stakeholders across relevant sectors.
• Communicate technical topics to colleagues and external partners by preparing and presenting reports, blog posts, organising and delivering presentations, and taking an active role in meetings and discussions.
• Publish - as a lead or co-author - peer-reviewed research articles, open source training curricula, and/or perspective, opinion and commentary articles, as appropriate. This responsibility will be defined to be aligned with the successful candidate's personal career goals, through collaborative discussion when they are in post.

This full time post is offered on a fixed term basis with the annual salary of £57,000 - £61,500.
