Job Position: Support Worker

Service: Housing & Community Support Services (HACSS)

Location: The Action Group, The Prentice Centre, 1 Granton Mains Avenue, Edinburgh (Carrick Knowe area).

Base: The Action Group, The Prentice Centre, Edinburgh (or regional base as directed).

Line Manager: Practice and Wellbeing Leader.

Salary:

  • Unqualified – £27,351.61 to £27,921.01 per annum pro rata.
  • Qualified – £27,921.01 to £28,409.07 per annum pro rata.
  • Casual rate – £13.45 per hour.
  • Sleepover rate – £107.60 per night.

Hours: Full‑time and part‑time – to be discussed with the post holder. Due to visa restrictions, candidates on restricted visas may be offered a maximum of 15 hours per week. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK without sponsorship.

Role Summary: This role provides 24/7 support to a man in his early twenties, promoting independent living skills, confidence, and daily life independence within his own accommodation. The support worker will work within the Carrick Knowe area of Edinburgh.

Main Purpose: The main purpose of this post is to provide a caring, efficient, and effective 24/7 support service to people who use The Action Group’s Services. This includes assisting participants to develop skills, participating in support activities, and ensuring choice and enrichment.

Specific Duties:

  • Practice the TAG Key Worker system, organising support plans, case reviews, and handovers with stakeholders; maintain records, case files, and other documentation.
  • Promote the physical and emotional well‑being of the people we support at all times, including supporting self‑care, carrying out risk assessments, and related tasks.
  • Actively develop meaningful and trusting relationships with the people we support, helping them gain insight into their own behaviour, attitudes, and reactions.
  • Encourage independence in all daily living activities whenever possible, and provide assistance only when necessary (e.g., housework, food preparation, household administration).
  • Promote people’s hobbies, interests, and activities, encouraging participation in all aspects of community life. This may include organising day trips and activities for young people, accompanying them to sporting activities, and participating as appropriate.
  • Assist with personal care as required.
  • Help the people we support maximize their ability to communicate effectively and promote self‑advocacy wherever possible.
  • Advocate on behalf of the people we support when needed, liaising with external organisations regarding benefits, education, tenancy, employment, and other matters.
  • Work with relatives and carers of the people we support, arranging support plans, addressing complaints and frustrations, and ensuring relatives play a significant role in the person’s life where appropriate.
  • Provide information about the wide range of local services, amenities, and organisations available to the people we support.
  • Work with both individuals and groups of people across all duties above, according to need.
  • Participate flexibly in the various shift patterns required by the needs of the people we support (including evenings, weekends, and outside normal office hours).
  • Regularly undertake ‘sleepover’ or ‘waking night’ duties where required.
  • Occasionally cover short‑term absences of Support Workers in other teams.

General Duties:

  • Read and work in accordance with TAG’s Mission, Aims & Objectives, and current Business Plan.
  • Manage own work time effectively.
  • Keep up to date with paperwork and maintain effective, organised filing systems suitable to the role.
  • Treat everyone with consideration and respect.
  • Ensure prompt, polite, and clear communication with staff and people we support.
  • Keep up to date and comply with all applicable TAG policies and procedures (covering health & safety, care standards, etc).
  • Promote and respect individual rights and responsibilities at all times.
  • Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality as appropriate to the role.
  • Assist manager and colleagues as appropriate and whenever possible.
  • Take charge of own CPD and contribute to TAG maintaining the Investors In People standard.
  • Maintain own work‑life balance, including taking annual leave at regular intervals.

  • Requires registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC). New applicants who are not registered have six months to register; registered applicants must inform the SSSC of employment with The Action Group.
  • Requires PVG clearance. Applicants not members of the PVG scheme must join before commencing employment.
