The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and commercially minded Group Financial Controller to join a successful, owner-led SME group based in Chesterfield.

This is a broad and high impact finance role, offering the opportunity to take ownership of the group's entire financial function while working closely with the owners and senior leadership team.

The business is looking for someone who is forward-thinking, commercially aware and ambitious, rather than someone who simply wants to maintain the status quo.

You'll have the opportunity to improve processes, develop reporting, provide meaningful commercial insight and play a key role in supporting the group's continued growth.

This role offers genuine long-term progression towards Finance Director, so would be ideal for an experienced finance professional who is ready for their next step in their career.

The Role

As Group Financial Controller, you'll take responsibility for the day to day and strategic financial management of the group, ensuring robust financial control while providing the commercial insight required to support decision making.

You'll have a broad remit across finance, including

  • Taking ownership of the group's full finance function (you need to be comfortable being hands on)
  • Producing accurate and insightful monthly management accounts
  • Leading the month end and year end processes
  • Preparing monthly group level financial and commercial reporting
  • Providing senior management with clear analysis, commentary and recommendations
  • Developing budgets, forecasts and cashflow reporting
  • Monitoring performance against budgets and forecasts
  • Supporting commercial decision making through meaningful financial analysis
  • Reviewing margins, profitability and key business drivers
  • Improving financial processes, controls and systems
  • Working closely with operational and commercial teams to understand business performance
  • Managing relationships with external accountants, auditors, banks and other professional advisers
  • Supporting statutory reporting and compliance
  • Overseeing VAT, tax and other relevant financial obligations
  • Ensuring strong financial controls and governance across the group
  • Identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, profitability and financial visibility
  • Supporting the owners and senior leadership team with ad hoc analysis and strategic projects

This role would suit someone who is potentially already operating at Management Accountant / Senior Management Accountant level, or number 1 in finance and keen to step into a senior finance position.

Experience within an SME would be highly beneficial, particularly where you've had broad exposure to the full finance function and enjoy adding commercial value to the business.

You will need to be

  • ACCA/ CIMA qualified (or equivalent) or finalist level
  • Someone with strong technical accounting and financial control skills
  • Commercially minded with the ability to dig into what the numbers actually mean for the wider business
  • Able to move comfortably between detailed financial work and high level commercial reporting
  • Confident in reporting and presenting financial information to non finance stakeholders in a meaningful and insightful way
  • An excellent problem solver
  • Proactive by nature, someone who uses their initiative and looks for ways to improve and streamline processes and controls
  • Comfortable operating with autonomy and taking ownership
  • Confident to challenge constructively and offer opinion, you will be a sounding board for the senior leadership team
  • Forward-thinking and interested in using technology and better processes to improve finance
  • Keen to make a visible difference rather than simply inherit an established structure
