About the role Biomedical Scientists run laboratory analyses that diagnose disease, monitor treatment and screen populations. Day-to-day work mixes sample preparation, automated and manual lab analysis, result interpretation, quality control, equipment maintenance and reporting to clinicians.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse blood, tissue, urine and other samples for clinical diagnosis
- Specialise into clinical chemistry, haematology, microbiology, histology, cytology or transfusion
- Work across NHS pathology labs, private labs, public health labs and pharma R&D
- Interpret results and provide quality assurance
- Maintain and calibrate equipment
- Report results to clinicians
Qualifications & Experience
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- IBMS accredited Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science or equivalent
- IBMS Registration Portfolio completed
- Clinical experience in at least one pathology discipline preferred
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

UK Biomedical Scientists are paid on the NHS Agenda for Change bands: Band 5 (£28,400+) progressing to specialist Band 6 within 2-3 years; senior and advanced practitioner roles sit at Bands 7 and 8. London weighting adds £4,300 (Inner) / £3,700 (Outer) / £1,200 (Fringe) to NHS base pay. Private pathology labs pay 5-15 % above NHS rates for experienced BMSs.
