Join us in shaping the future of insurance tax policy. As Senior Policy Adviser, Taxation, you’ll take the lead on indirect tax issues such as VAT and Insurance Premium Tax, helping to shape how they affect insurers and the wider industry. You’ll work collaboratively with members and colleagues to navigate complex tax and regulatory matters, while championing the industry’s perspective with government, international bodies and key stakeholders. You’ll also get involved in events and discussions that bring people together and make a real difference. The role starts in October 2026.

What’s the job?

  • Take the lead on shaping the industry’s approach to indirect tax, including VAT and Insurance Premium Tax, working closely with members and colleagues across the ABI.
  • Develop clear, well‑evidenced policy positions and consultation responses that help influence legislation and strengthen the industry’s voice.
  • Represent the insurance sector with confidence, engaging with HM Treasury, HMRC, Parliament and international stakeholders on key tax issues.
  • Build trusted relationships with member firms, understanding their priorities and helping them navigate the tax impacts of regulation and market change.
  • Play an active role in industry and technical forums, including working groups and external committees, bringing people together around shared challenges.
  • Collaborate across ABI teams to raise the profile of tax policy, communicate complex issues clearly, and support advocacy around major moments such as Budgets.
  • Contribute to a supportive, expert team environment, sharing knowledge, assisting colleagues and getting involved in events and conferences.

What skills do you need?

  • Technical expertise – you have a deep understanding of the UK Tax System and UK Tax Policy, likely with accountancy or tax qualifications and significant relevant experience in indirect tax.
  • Analytical Capability – you can deal with complex multi‑layered issues in order to inform an evidence‑based approach to policy making, decision making, and problem solving.
  • Stakeholder management – you quickly build credibility and work with stakeholders to understand their priorities and concerns, gather evidence from them, and develop robust policy positions.
  • Communication – you can present complex financial concepts to a senior, but not necessarily expert, audience and can argue persuasively for the industry’s interests.
