Employment Law Solicitor / Department Head - Braintree, Essex
We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Employment Solicitor (ideally 6-10+ years PQE, although all suitably experienced candidates will be considered) to establish, develop, and lead a new Employment Law Department within our growing legal practice based in Braintree.

This is a rare opportunity for an ambitious individual who wants more than just a management role. The successful candidate will have the autonomy and support to build a department from the ground up, shape its strategy, recruit a team, and create a profitable and respected employment law offering.
Responsibilities
As Head of Employment Law, you will:
- Establish and lead the firm’s Employment Law Department.
- Advise employers and employees on a broad range of employment law matters.
- Handle contentious and non-contentious employment work.
- Build and maintain a strong referral network.
- Develop relationships with local businesses and organisations.
- Ensure compliance, risk management, and high professional standards.
- Recruit, mentor, and manage team members as the department grows.
- Contribute to the wider strategic direction of the firm.
- Identify opportunities for cross-referrals and collaborative working across the firm.
- Manage a personal caseload of employment law matters whilst leading and developing the department.
- Meet agreed billing, financial and performance targets.
- Monitor departmental profitability and contribute to business growth objectives.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will have substantial experience in employment law together with the ambition, commercial awareness and leadership skills required to establish and grow a successful department from inception. Hold a current practising certificate and be authorised to practise in England and Wales.
Previous management or supervisory experience is advantageous, together with experience of financial management, budgeting and business development. Applications are welcomed from candidates with an established client following, which will be recognised and rewarded as part of the overall package.
A proactive approach to business development, networking and marketing, together with excellent communication and client relationship skills, strong IT proficiency and a positive attitude are essential.
