Open Spaces Operative

We are currently looking for an Open Spaces Operative to join our Open Spaces Team at Thanet District Council. The role of Open Spaces Operative includes a range of grounds maintenance tasks across Thanet including grass cutting (ride‑on and push mowers, strimmers), hedge cutting, weed control, maintaining beds and borders, as well as assisting with other tasks such as tree planting.

Responsibilities

  • Grass cutting using ride‑on and push mowers and strimmers.
  • Hedge cutting.
  • Weed control and maintenance of beds and borders.
  • Assists with tree planting and other site tasks.
  • Respond to visitor enquiries and complaints.

Requirements

  • Physically fit to undertake manual work throughout the day, including large amounts of walking.
  • Previous experience in a similar grounds maintenance role is desirable.
  • Experience of driving a vehicle with a trailer is desirable.
  • Driving licence essential; full training will be provided.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in all weathers.
  • Desire to make a difference to residents and visitors of Thanet.

Benefits

This is a full‑time position based at the Open Spaces Depot in Margate. Working hours are 7.30am to 3.30pm (3pm Friday) with an unpaid 10 minute break and 20 minute lunch programmed into the day.
