The Outfall Investigation Technician role is to identify and trace pollution in the affected catchments, narrow down areas and sub-catchments to street and property levels using lift and look tracing, caging, CCTV and sampling. You will then carry out property surveys at domestic and commercial properties to check connections using dye and CCTV and identify misconnections or other pollution sources. You will then complete a survey sheet detailing the issue for the customer to rectify.

The role will also require follow-up visits to check rectifications, assist customers in finding solutions, and diagnose pollution at outfalls. It may also support network regions with reactive tracing, where required and STW catchment investigations. Technicians may also need to install missing surface water rodding eye caps in private drains, which requires confined space entry and light civils work.

What you’ll be doing as an Outfall Investigation Technician:

  • Working with the Project Advisor on various catchments and projects to resolve PSWOs.
  • Pollution diagnosis.
  • Pollution tracing and narrowing down using CCTV, lift and looks, caging, and ammonia probe.
  • Carrying out property surveys and testing connections.
  • Identify misconnections and draw up survey sheets.
  • Check misconnection rectifications.
  • Advising customers.
  • Installing missing rodding eye caps in private surface water drains.
  • Chapter 8 NRSWA short during highway set-ups.

Location: Field-based with a flexible location within the Thames Water Operating Area, ideally Beckton STW, Mogden STW, Maple Lodge STW, Hogsmill STW.

Hours and Working Pattern: 38 hours a week, Monday-Friday.

Other: A Van, PPE and Tools will be provided.

What you should bring to the role:

  • Full driving licence.
  • Competent at using the appropriate IT systems.
  • Excellent organisation skills – recording accurate notes on the system.
  • Confident communicator and able to manage difficult situations calmly.
  • Manage your own workload and projects – day-to-day and weekly.
  • Not colour blind.

Additional skills and experiences would be great to have/bring:

  • Some knowledge of drainage and sewerage systems is desirable.
  • Ideally, experience of using GIS and O365 software.
