Secondment/Fixed Term Contract until 31 March 2027. An exciting opportunity for those with an interest in Criminal Justice and Law who would like to make a difference in protecting the public. The role of a Police Prosecutor/Court Presentation Officer is varied within a supportive environment, offering an excellent opportunity to develop confidence, public speaking in a court environment, and advocacy skills in an important public service.
Thames Valley Police have assumed responsibility for presenting low-level traffic offences and Domestic Violence Protection Notices in the magistrates’ court. The main purpose of the role will be presenting cases in court, managing individuals attending court, cross-examining exceptional hardship disqualification matters, and managing contested matters. For Domestic Violence Protection Notices, you will prepare and present the case to the District Judge or Magistrates to obtain an Order.
You will manage daily court listings ensuring cases meet prosecution and evidential standards and are prepared for presentation. You will present case facts in context, respond to mitigation, legal arguments, and liaise with defendants, victims, or interested parties at court over potential trial issues or procedures. After court, you will provide feedback, manage file upgrade requests, and request link live applications and outcomes on databases and systems.
Building good working relationships and providing feedback with internal and external agencies such as Crown Prosecution Service, Defence, Defendants, Perpetrators, Victims, and Officers is essential. You will need to demonstrate significant verbal and written presentation skills together with strong interpersonal skills including negotiation and influencing. Experience of effective decision-making and an ability to work as part of a team is essential to meet deadlines in the face of unrealistic demands. Excellent planning and organisation skills are also required, identifying issues promptly and managing them.
You will be required to demonstrate relevant experience and proven skills in the criminal justice arena and good knowledge of crime, traffic, and court procedures, as well as an understanding of relevant legislation as it applies to the role. Strong MS Office IT skills are required, including Word, Excel, and experience of working with databases. The successful candidate will have court presenting experience.
The role is hybrid, requiring attendance at court and HQ with a small element of working from home. However, 80% of the time will be spent attending court and the police station. Depending on court workloads, you may occasionally be required to work unsociable hours, and for this reason, a full UK licence is required.
If you are a permanent member of staff applying for this role, please note it will be offered on a secondment basis. Important: All secondments must be supported in writing by your Line Manager and Head of Department/Commander or Deputy. Please attach written approval from your line manager and Head of Department in your application. If the secondment is not supported, the role may be offered on a fixed term contract basis, which has implications including loss of continuous service protections.
Please note: Shift allowance, on-call, or other job-related allowances from the previous role will not be protected unless they are attached to the new role for the duration of the secondment.
As part of the Thames Valley Police family, you will enjoy a fantastic range of benefits including 24 days annual leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time), flexible working conditions, a wide range of lifestyle discounts, career development opportunities, and the option to join a local government pension scheme.
