As a Police Call Handler, you will help protect our communities by being the first voice they hear when they call for help and assistance. You do not need previous experience – we’ll give you all the training and support you need to be ready to take that call. We do ask that you have common sense, a calm head under pressure, high levels of resilience, attention to detail, and an ability to communicate and use IT systems.

Responsibilities

  • Handle digital contact from members of the public via Bobbi live chat.
  • Manage a variety of calls, from non‑urgent 101 enquiries to distressing 999 emergencies.
  • Make key decisions whilst taking information from callers, and respond to potential abuse.
  • Take information from callers and provide appropriate advice or assistance.
  • Prepare for the unexpected and maintain professionalism under pressure.

Qualifications

  • No previous experience required.
  • Age 18 or older.
  • English and/or Maths GCSE (Grade A‑C / 9‑4 or equivalent); Functional Skills will be offered to those who do not meet this requirement.
  • Common sense, calm head under pressure, resilience, attention to detail, communication skills, and IT proficiency.

Training & Apprenticeship

All successful candidates will need to complete a 6‑week full‑time course, likely taking place in Kidlington. The programme includes structured on‑ and off‑the‑job training as part of a comprehensive apprenticeship, leading to a nationally recognised Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Service Contact Handling.

Benefits

Rank/Grade: TVP‑Broad Band 3F. Band 3F salary circa £39,561.39 per annum, inclusive of 33.5% shift allowance plus benefits. All roles are available for flexible working—including job sharing and part‑time—unless there are legitimate operational or business reasons why this cannot be accommodated.

Vetting

All posts require a level of Police Vetting as per the National Vetting Code of Practice. Residency requirements apply to enable all applicants to be checked in an equitable manner. Thames Valley Police will consider applicants who do not meet the criteria on a case‑by‑case basis.
