The Force Cyber Crime Unit (FCCU) specialises in serious and complex investigations concerning those engaged in computer misuse act (CMA) offences, such as network intrusion, hacking, malware attacks, ransomware, and denial of service attacks and CMA-Linked offences such as Fraud and Blackmail. Investigations often involve working collaboratively and proactively with internal departments and other law enforcement agencies, executing search warrants, and tracing cryptocurrency. The work is traditional complex investigation but in an exciting and continuously evolving crime type.

In this role, you will be responsible for conducting investigations and operations into the most serious incidents of network based organised criminal activity; to detect digital crime; gather and distribute relevant and quality intelligence; to provide advice and assistance to officers engaged in the investigation of digital crime; and produce evidence in a form which is admissible in Court. This is carried out in relation to cybercrime as defined by the Home Office and the National Strategy.

The team are looking for a Detective Constable to manage and progress the investigation of cybercrime offences and other incidents/enquiries, working as an integral part of a mixed team of Police Officers and Staff collaborated across the South East embedded within the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU).

Principal Responsibilities
  • Conduct investigations and operations into incidents of network based criminal activity.
  • Undertaking proactive and reactive investigation, acting as case officer, setting investigative strategies as required.
  • Attending court as Officer in the Case, obtaining warrants and planning operations.
  • Prepare interview strategies and interview suspects at both an investigative and technical level.
  • Fully understand the process of forensic examination and retrieval of evidence and/or intelligence from computers, computer related media and other digital devices recovered during cybercrime investigations, including the NPCC Principals of Data Recovery and Digital Investigation.
  • Develop and maintain specialised technical knowledge through a supported training pathway to include attendance at CPD events, out of force residential courses to keep abreast of digital and cyber threats relevant to policing and law enforcement.

We are looking for enthusiastic investigators who are willing to learn new skills and have a passion for victim care and bringing criminals to justice. We are supported by a team of volunteers who assist in technical matters, so please don’t be put off applying if you are concerned that you might not be technical, you will be supported with training and specialists. This is a hugely varied and challenging role which will see the successful candidate complete investigative actions, interview victims, witnesses and suspects, obtain and review digital evidence, plan and execute search warrants, prepare case files ensuring completeness and delivery in accordance with court deadlines, legislation and force policy, and maintain victim and witness confidence to facilitate successful outcomes.

The successful candidate must be PIP2 qualified, having completed their NIE and PIP2IDP. You will be asked to demonstrate flexibility regarding working hours in line with operational demand and occasionally this may require working away from home. For this reason, a full UK Driving Licence is essential to the role. The successful candidate will be based in Sussex, but you will be expected to travel across the region when required.

Due to the nature of our work, security is of paramount importance to us and therefore it will be necessary to pass and maintain vetting level SC together with a number of enhanced security checks. In order to achieve this, you must have resided in the UK for the past five years. Exemptions may apply for overseas or other diplomatic service (with HM Government), and studying abroad.
