At Thalia, we’re looking for an experienced Landfill Supervisor to join our team and take responsibility for the safe, compliant and efficient day-to-day operation of our landfill site. Reporting to the Operations Manager, you’ll be a visible, hands-on leader on site. You’ll supervise and support our site operatives, coordinate daily activities and ensure that operations are carried out safely, efficiently and in accordance with our environmental permit. This is a varied role combining people leadership, landfill operations, environmental compliance and hands-on site activity. You’ll work with colleagues, contractors, regulators and other stakeholders to keep the site running effectively while maintaining high standards of safety and environmental performance. What you’ll be doing You’ll coordinate the daily activities of the landfill site, making sure work is properly planned, resourced and carried out safely and efficiently. You’ll: Supervise the day-to-day activities of site operatives and organise work schedules to ensure appropriate staffing levels. Oversee waste drop-off, loading and unloading activities, maintaining safe and efficient working areas. Supervise the movement, loading and unloading of materials across the site. Operate mobile plant, machinery and on-site vehicles when required. Ensure drivers, contractors, visitors and colleagues follow site rules and safe working practices. Monitor plant and machinery condition and help coordinate maintenance to minimise operational downtime. Complete and issue skip delivery and collection documentation where required. Check and approve timesheets and support effective resource planning. Safety and environmental responsibility will be at the heart of your role. You’ll: Ensure operations are carried out in accordance with Thalia’s Health & Safety and Environmental policies and procedures. Provide Certificate of Technical Competence (CoTC) cover, helping maintain the required operational and compliance standards. Support the site in meeting the requirements of its environmental permit. Collect, maintain and manage operational and environmental data required for permit compliance. Monitor and manage the site's leachate management system, ensuring levels and operations remain within permit requirements. Maintain effective relationships with contractors, relevant authorities and the Environment Agency as required. Identify operational or environmental concerns early and take appropriate action within your level of authority. As the first-line manager for our site operatives, you’ll play an important role in creating a safe, positive and high-performing team. You’ll: Provide clear day-to-day direction, support and supervision. Set annual objectives for your direct reports and regularly review progress. Carry out annual performance reviews and support individual development. Encourage good communication, teamwork and accountability. Lead by example and create an environment where people feel confident to speak up, share ideas and improve the way we work. What we’re looking for You’ll have practical experience of working within waste, landfill or a similarly regulated operational environment and be comfortable balancing hands-on operational responsibilities with people supervision and compliance. Qualifications You’ll need: Certificate of Technical Competence Level 4 under the WAMITAB scheme, or an appropriate equivalent qualification. IOSH Managing Safely, or equivalent. Experience We’re looking for someone who has experience of: Working within the waste industry. Operating mobile plant and machinery. Supervising or coordinating operational teams. Working with computerised weighbridge systems. Working within environmental permit and compliance requirements. Previous landfill experience would be particularly beneficial. Skills You’ll be: A confident and supportive people manager. Safety-conscious with a strong understanding of operational risk. Comfortable making day-to-day decisions within defined levels of authority. Able to understand the operational and maintenance requirements of mobile plant and machinery. Organised and able to coordinate people, plant and competing operational priorities. Comfortable using computer-based systems, including Microsoft Office. Able to build positive working relationships with colleagues, contractors and external stakeholders. Someone who takes ownership and looks for practical ways to improve how the site operates.
