Integrated Airspace Protection Systems (IAS) Our main purpose is to protect and defend. We provide rapid integrated solutions for detection, coordination, fire control, engagement and support. We cover three sectors: Surface Attack & Air Defence (UK), Air Defence (International) and Air Operations & Services as well as Space.
Summary
This is a key role within Thales to ensure that we design and deliver products that can be certified to international standards and can be safely used by our Customers. The role plans and manages the safety related activities within bids and projects to ensure the end product risk has been reduced so far as is reasonably practicable. It will lead and conduct the hazard analysis activities and development of safety & environmental requirements for IAS products throughout their lifecycle. It will also provide direction to the design teams for the implementation of requirements and design features to provide the necessary safety assurance and safety argument.
Responsibilities
- Take responsibility for identification and delivery of all aspects of the S&EM design activities as part of an Integrated Project Team in accordance with the IAS safety management system.
- Carry out hazard analysis, risk evaluation and specify S&E requirements in the areas of performance, engineering features, interfacing and testing requirements.
- Communicate a reasoned argument to all disciplines across the project team for the inclusion of S&E measures in order to ensure adherence to all the derived S&EM requirements.
- Maintain and ensure compliance to S&EM processes and procedures.
- Maintain a good understanding of all relevant S&E standards and regulations and ensure they are followed in IAS.
- Planning and estimating the cost of project S&EM engineering activities.
- Prepare hazard analysis reports, safety cases as well as development of valid safety arguments.
Skills
- Ability to define and implement sound engineering design principles and methodology.
- Ability to carry out detailed safety analysis, risk evaluation and safety case construction using best practice approach.
- Ability to carry out detailed environmental analysis, impact and risk evaluation.
- Able to address project solutions from a whole life systems engineering viewpoint.
Experience
- Experience in a safety engineering role within an engineering environment.
- Experience of leading safety engineering related activities.
- Working knowledge of product safety standards and legislation.
- Knowledge of product safety engineering and environmental management practices.
- Experience of working within an airworthiness environment.
Qualifications
- Science or Engineering degree (or equivalent).
- Safety credentials and training records.
- Ideally a Chartered Engineer or member of a Professional Institution.
- Ideally a post graduate qualification (or equivalent) in safety or environmental engineering.
Security Clearance Requirement:
Due to the nature of the work that we do at Thales, many of our roles are subject to security restrictions. This role requires Security Clearance (SC). It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance prior to commencing employment. To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
