With growing numbers of mines in the world’s oceans, UK and France set themselves a clear mine countermeasures (MCM) challenge: to drive a step change in their navies’ mine warfare performance and significantly improve the safety of personnel. The ambition was immense: the development of an integrated, high-tech, ‘system of systems’ that could be deployed quickly across the world; to make rapid programme progress, in an area with no established doctrine; and to have cast-iron certainty on reliability, autonomy, and cybersecurity.

Maritime Autonomous Systems Trials Engineer (IVVQ)

Thales are now looking to hire a Maritime Autonomous Systems Trials Engineer (IVVQ) on a major project working within the Maritime Autonomous & Remote Systems Team (MMCM). We require a keen and motivated Engineer skilled in Integration, Verification, Validation and Qualification (IVVQ).

The MMCM Project is a complex system-of-systems incorporating Platform, Sensors, Command and Control, payload deployment, autonomy and communications.

An IVVQ engineer is needed to deliver the subsystem IVVQ strategies and associated acceptance & tests to ensure successful delivery to client.

What will you deliver?

  • You will be a member of a team responsible to the USV IVVQ Lead for delivering the subsystem’s IVVQ strategy, involving the performing of tests, fault diagnosis and operating the systems through close-working with the Systems, Software and Hardware and operations engineering teams.
  • You will be responsible for the collation and presentation of test Verification and Validation evidence, captured during test activities, to enable design sell off and/or Customer Acceptance of the entities to be delivered.
  • You will be expected to liaise and support the Systems, Software and Hardware teams in the conduct and resolution of investigations into outstanding issues prior to delivery.
  • You will be able to Integrate and test all hardware and software Sub-Systems as fitted to the Unmanned Surface Vessel.
  • To achieve this you will be proficient in fault diagnosing and rectification as required, as well as recording Defects for further action within the companies Fault Recording and Analysis tools.
  • You will be expected to liaise with the USV Systems Engineering Manager and the IVVQ Manager for the overarching system.

Who are we looking for?

Essential

  • A logical, methodical and thorough manner, having an eye for detail and a wiliness to investigate and document findings.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technical issues to team members, Design Authorities and varying levels of senior management.
  • Ability to work under pressure, either independently (where appropriate) or under supervision of the designated lead engineer.
  • Have a broad understanding and creative use of computer systems
  • Knowledge of electrical / electronic engineering.
  • Knowledge of electro-mechanical systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite for producing, modifying or reviewing technical documents, reports, plans and spread sheets.
  • Basic planning

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Autonomous and/or remotely operated platforms/systems
  • Can navigate and configure Linux systems
  • Knowledge of Command Control, Communications and Computer Information systems.
  • Knowledge of Installation, Testing and Commissioning
  • Experience of working to (or writing) technical requirements
  • Knowledge of Software engineering
  • Knowledge of IT networking
  • Knowledge of marine platforms (electro-mechanical)
  • A working knowledge of the DOORS requirements management tool and its application to IVVQ
