The Controls Design Engineering Apprentice is a key member of TGW Northern Europe’s Controls Team and is vital to the continued successful delivery of our projects. Apprentices will learn all aspects of controls design engineering and form part of project teams. Throughout your apprenticeship, you will produce power calculations, sensor actuator layouts (SALs), ePLAN schematics, technical specifications, and emulation modules. Working as part of the Hardware and Systems design team, you will create all the required design documentation to ensure the successful delivery of our projects.

WHAT YOU’LL BE HANDLING

  • Year 1: Full-time college study for a Level 3 Diploma
  • Years 2-4: Onsite familiarisation with TGW systems, bespoke training in our education centre, and hands-on experience in installation and maintenance.
  • Design & Documentation: Review mechanical layouts, populate electrical/control hardware, create Sensor Actuator Layouts, cable routes, Bills of Materials, and design calculations.
  • Technical Compliance & Support: Ensure system components meet design limitations (cable capacity, voltage drop, fault currents, etc.), define interfaces for third-party equipment, and support on-site technical matters.
  • Process & Risk Management: Participate in project Design Risk Assessments, update drawings based on ‘red line’ changes, and maintain revision control and as-built documentation.
  • General & Professional Development: Communicate effectively within the team, follow health & safety regulations, uphold company standards, and actively manage self-development.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Passion for engineering with a strong desire to learn.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • GCSE grades 4 or above in Maths and English.
  • Willingness to spend the first year at college in Coventry (accommodation provided if needed).
  • Dedicated and driven to develop new skills.
  • Open to staying away from home if required.
  • Age 18+ and hold a UK Driving licence.
