We are one of the largest fertility service providers in Europe, operating IVF clinics and egg/sperm freezing banks in the UK, Poland and Netherlands. Our mission is to use technology to provide patients with a memorable best‑in‑class fertility journey that leads to the best outcome starting a family.
Part‑time specialist nurse working within the fertility clinic, 3 days a week (21 hours per week). The schedule includes weekends on rotation (1:4). Location: Wessex Fertility, East of Southampton, close to M27 junction 7. The clinic has a 5/5 inspection rating from the HFEA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop clinical competence in ART skills, plan and coordinate treatment cycles, and carry out investigations such as endocrine profiles.
- Assist in the management and support of sub‑fertile couples before, during and after treatment cycles, creating a therapeutic environment to meet individual needs.
- Conduct patient consultations before, during and post treatment cycles.
- Ensure informed consent is given and appropriate unit and Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority consent forms are completed, discussing risks associated with ART and potential usage of gametes for research.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, providing information and implication counselling to enable couples to make informed choices regarding their treatment.
- Support patients and families in highly stressful situations (e.g. breaking bad news, diagnosis of ectopic or miscarriage, managing bereavement and anger management) face‑to‑face and over the telephone.
- Through implication counselling, ensure couples are aware of risks such as ovarian hyper‑stimulation, multiple pregnancy and the ethical issues of research on gametes/embryos.
- Explain and complete consent forms for the storage of frozen gametes and the posthumous use thereof, and explain implications of disposal of property in the event of separation or divorce.
- Keep accurate records for each patient and assist with the production of written information to meet changing expectations of patients.
- Assist with collation of all data from procedures and transfer this to records on the computer and into patient notes to satisfy HFEA regulations.
- In conjunction with senior nursing staff, manage booking of treatment cycles, plan drug prescribing and liaise with GPs.
- Explain individualised treatment schedules, potential side effects of drugs and demonstrate injection technique with the sub‑cutaneous injection pen.
- Coordinate oocyte retrieval and embryo transfer/intrauterine insemination, donor insemination, providing appropriate counselling, support and advice with cycle outcome.
- Interpret complex clinical information, anticipate potential problems, take action to prevent/minimise them, respond promptly to changes and develop specialised care plans following relevant protocols.
- Demonstrate dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail in preparing specialist equipment for procedures, ensuring adherence to local policies such as intravenous drug administration and maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and sterility of equipment used in IVF procedures.
- Supervise and assist in preparation and care of the patient and partner before, during and after procedures.
- Assist medical staff with procedures such as performing transvaginal ultrasound‑guided oocyte retrieval.
- Work within the legal framework established by the 1990 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act and Care Quality Commission.
- Manage difficult situations with competence, using relevant protocols and providing support to patients, relatives and the multidisciplinary team.
- Ensure procedures/policies are in place to manage emergency/crisis situations competently and support patients, relatives and staff during and after the event.
- Ensure COSHH, infection control, risk management and health‑and‑safety maintenance are implemented according to unit policy.
- Maintain accurate and legible record keeping and patient confidentiality according to Trust and HFEA policy.
- Ensure complaints and grievances are dealt with competently and effectively in line with the unit’s complaints procedure.
- Support senior nursing staff with maintenance of pharmacy drug stores, including controlled drugs, in line with Trust policy and Home Office legislation.
Experience and Qualifications:
- 1st level registration with the NMC.
- Interest in women’s health.
- Computer skills.
- Phlebotomy.
- Theatre and recovery experience.
- Desirable: previous experience in the fertility or women’s health setting, degree level education, teaching/mentoring qualification, sonography experience.
