Fertility Nurse/Midwife in Belfast

The post-holder will be one of a group of specialist nurses working within the fertility clinic. Treatments range from IVF and ICSI, ovulation induction, egg donation and sharing, egg retrieval and surgical sperm retrieval. This role is full‑time and 37.5 hours per week; weekends are required on rotation.

Location: Belfast Fertility was established in 2013 and is Northern Ireland’s longest standing private IVF clinic. With approximately 500 fresh cycles and 400 frozen cycles per year, we offer a full suite of treatment and diagnostic services, including PGT. Conveniently located in a business park on the outskirts of Belfast, adjacent to J1 of the M2, there is ample free parking for staff & patients.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop a satisfactory level of clinical competence in ART skills, such as planning and coordinating treatment cycles and undertaking endocrine profile investigations.
• Assist in the management and support of sub‑fertile couples before, during and after treatment cycles, developing a therapeutic environment that meets the individual needs of the couples.
• Conduct patient consultations before, during and after treatment cycles.
• Ensure informed consent is given and complete the appropriate unit and HFEA consent forms, discussing risks associated with ART and potential usage of gametes for research.
• Display excellent communication skills and provide information and counselling to enable couples to make informed choices regarding their treatment.
• Support patients and families in highly stressful situations (e.g. breaking bad news, diagnosing ectopic or miscarriage, managing bereavement and anger management) both face‑to‑face and over the telephone.
• Throughout the process counselling, ensure couples are aware of risks such as ovarian hyper‑stimulation, multiple pregnancy (with risk of prematurity and death) and the ethical issues around research on gametes/embryos.
• Explain and complete consent forms for the storage of frozen gametes and the posthumous use thereof, addressing implications of disposal of property in the event of separation or divorce.
• Maintain accurate records for each patient of all communication and clinical activity in line with NMC regulations, and assist with the production of written information to meet evolving needs.
• Assist with collation of all data from procedures and transfer to patient notes to satisfy HFEA regulations.
• Work with senior nursing staff to manage booking of patients’ treatment cycles, plan drug prescribing and liaise with GPs.
• Explain individualized treatment schedules, including side effects, and demonstrate injection technique using a sub‑cutaneous injection pen.
• Co‑ordinate oocyte retrieval and embryo transfer/intra‑uterine insemination, donor insemination, and provide appropriate counselling, support and advice on cycle outcomes.
• Interpret complex clinical data, anticipate problems, take action to prevent or minimise them, and respond promptly to any changes.
• Demonstrate dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail when preparing specialist equipment for procedures, adhering to local policies for intravenous drug administration, blood sampling, catheterisation, and cleanliness and sterility standards in line with HFEA practice.
• Supervise and assist in the preparation and care of patients and partners before, during and after procedures.
• Provide assistance to medical staff with procedures, such as trans‑vaginal ultrasound‑guided oocyte retrieval.
• Work within the legal framework of the 1990 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act and the Care Quality Commission.
• Manage difficult situations with competence, using relevant protocols to support patients, relatives and multidisciplinary team members.
• Ensure procedures and policies are in place to manage emergency/crisis situations, supporting patients, relatives and staff afterward.
• Implement COSHH, infection control, risk management and health‑and‑safety maintenance per unit policy.
• Ensure all record keeping is accurate, legible and maintains patient confidentiality per Trust and HFEA policy.
• Handle complaints and grievances competently in line with the unit’s complaints procedure.
• Support senior nursing staff with pharmacy drug stores, including controlled drugs, per Trust policy and Home Office legislation.

Experience & Job Requirements

• 1st level registration with the NMC.
• Interest in women’s health.
• Computer skills.
• Phlebotomy.
• Theatre and recovery experience.
• Desirable: previous experience in the fertility or women’s health setting, degree‑level education, teaching/mentoring qualification, sonography experience.

Salary Competitive (depending on experience)

Working Hours 37.5 hours per week. Weekends required at a 1:4 rotation.
