Marine Safety and Assurance Manager

Salary: £56,000 – £60,000

Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 percent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangement can evolve subject to business requirements.

As the Safety and Assurance Manager, you’ll be responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of all SHE systems across all departments at Woolwich Ferry. In this role, you will ensure that the Operations team is able to maintain the Woolwich Ferry operations in a safe, efficient, and compliant manner in accordance with TfL, statutory, regulatory, quality, environmental, and safety management systems and policies. You will ensure that the Company conducts its business with complete regulatory compliance with safety as a core value.

Accountabilities

1. Provide technical management for all safety-related matters across Operations and Engineering to ensure compliance with the Safety Management Manual, ISO quality assurance, and HSE Safety & Environmental Standards.
2. Promote a ‘just safety culture’ across the operation through engagement in accordance with the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers (COSWP).
3. Deputise for and support the Head of Marine Safety and Assurance in reporting, sharing knowledge, best practices, and implementation of required projects.
4. Assume responsibility as Deputy Designated Person ensuring governance of the Woolwich Ferry Safety Management System and risk assessments are maintained.
5. Partner with Central SHE Function for compliance and reporting to SHE Business Partners while maintaining local SHE records.
6. Analyze all incidents, accidents, near misses, and safety observations to improve safety processes.
7. Monitor training requirements for all roles and manage required booking of courses and competencies.
8. Manage and develop a comprehensive audit programme for all areas of the Operations on TfL Management Systems.
9. Promote ideas to increase efficiency, reduce cost or time without compromising service standards.

Skills

1. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, MS Project, MS SharePoint.
2. Ability to manage current work bank and forward plan activities with clear milestones.
3. Ability to author procedures and business reports.
4. Ability to lead investigations and produce reports.
5. Ability to influence through effective communication.
6. Ability to inspire and motivate people to adopt the required safety culture.

Knowledge

1. Relevant Marine, Technical, or Environmental Degree or equivalent qualifications.
2. NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent (desirable).
3. Knowledge of risk management and its effective application.
4. Extensive knowledge of HSE regulations and their application.
5. Extensive knowledge of local, national, and international safety regulations.
6. Extensive knowledge of the ISM Code and its application.
7. Extensive knowledge of ISO quality systems.

Experience

1. Experience of working in a multi-disciplined safety-critical operational environment.
2. Seagoing experience in a senior role (desirable).
3. Proven SHE management experience within a maritime operation.
4. Proven track record of dealing with regulatory and certification societies.
5. Designated Person Ashore and Internal ISM Auditor qualifications (desirable).
6. Shoreside auditor qualifications (desirable).
