Are you passionate about creating accessible streets and places where walking and cycling feel natural, safe, and enjoyable for everyone? This is your chance to play a leading role in shaping the biggest transformation of active travel infrastructure in the UK. As part of our commitment to Greater Manchester's vision for a connected, inclusive and sustainable transport network, you'll help us deliver high quality, people centred designs that make it easier for communities to travel actively every day.
Your Role
As a Senior Active Travel Network Officer, you'll be central to planning and delivering Greater Manchester's future active travel network. Working closely with the Active Travel Network Manager, you'll provide technical leadership on active travel design, ensuring schemes meet Streets for All design principles and GM's active travel design standards. You'll collaborate with local authorities, consultants, and partners to shape future network plans, including the development of the Strategic Cycle Network. You'll lead on key studies, manage technical inputs into walking and accessibility research, and oversee consultant contracts delivering network analysis and feasibility work. Your expertise will support the delivery of infrastructure that aligns with Greater Manchester's Active Travel Mission and our ambition for a fully connected network.
Who are we?
You’ll be joining TfGM’s Active Travel Team, a passionate, multidisciplinary group dedicated to creating safer, more attractive and inclusive streets for everyone who walks and cycles. We work collaboratively across Greater Manchester's districts to design and deliver high quality active travel infrastructure, ensuring it empowers people to choose active and sustainable modes of travel. Our team leads on network planning, technical design assurance, research, and delivery support, contributing directly to the region's long term active travel mission. We’re continually developing our programme and building new connections across communities, making this an exciting time to join us and help shape the future of everyday travel in Greater Manchester.
What you’ll bring
What you do and how you do it is important whatever type of role you work in at TfGM and even small behaviours and actions can have a really big impact. At TfGM, our behaviours bring to life our values of Deliver, Care and Adapt. You’ll bring experience in planning, designing or delivering active travel infrastructure, along with the confidence to offer clear, practical technical advice to colleagues, partners and design teams. You’ll enjoy working collaboratively and building strong, positive relationships with local authorities, consultants and a wide range of stakeholders. You’ll be comfortable managing technical studies or consultant led work, and you’ll have the ability to turn complex information into clear, accessible reports for different audiences. You’ll also have a genuine interest in understanding how people move through streets and places, and in using research to shape better places. Experience using GIS to support network planning would be helpful, but not essential. You don’t need prior knowledge of Greater Manchester's Streets for All design approach, but you’ll be keen to develop familiarity with it quickly, and confident applying design principles that support high quality, inclusive active travel networks.
What we can offer you
You’ll join a supportive, purpose driven team working on projects that make a genuine difference to people’s daily lives. You’ll contribute to a transformational programme that helps empower more people to travel actively across Greater Manchester. This is a permanent role with a salary of £49,060 - £54,558. At TfGM we encourage candidates to discuss flexible working options at any stage of the recruitment process. We are happy to #talkflexibleworking to help colleagues maintain a healthy work life balance. Our benefits include: Generous annual leave starting at 28 days.
