About The Role
This is a full‑time role based at our manufacturing facility in Ipswich, Suffolk. As a Design Engineer I, you will support the delivery of high‑quality mechanical design work across a range of projects. Working under the guidance of senior‑engineering staff, you will contribute to the development of reliable, cost‑effective, and manufacturable solutions that meet performance targets and regulatory requirements.
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Produce mechanical designs that meet defined technical, performance, reliability, and cost requirements;
- Create and maintain accurate engineering documentation, including drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, and supporting technical publications in line with the Engineering Change process;
- Apply best‑practice design principles and utilise in‑house standards, approved reference materials, and standard components wherever appropriate;
- Ensure all designs are practical, efficient, and cost‑effective to manufacture by working closely with Manufacturing and Production teams;
- Ensure designs are developed in context, maintaining compatibility with adjacent components, assemblies, and wider system architectures;
- Perform component‑level CAE/FEA analyses to support design decisions, verify performance, and identify opportunities for improvement;
- Integrate mistake‑proofing, clear visual guidance, or simplified features into designs to reduce the potential for assembly errors or rework;
- Collaborate with other Engineers and internal departments when implementing new design concepts or engineering approaches;
- Interpret and incorporate relevant industry standards, directives, and regulatory requirements into product designs;
- Support the engineering team in ensuring all documentation and designs comply with applicable quality and safety expectations;
- Assist in the development of test plans and validation activities to ensure key design elements and performance objectives are met;
- Support testing activities as required, including preparing test articles, reviewing results, and contributing to design refinements.
About You
As a Design Engineer I, we would ask you to bring the following skills and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an Engineering discipline, ideally Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience designing with a range of materials, including steels, plastics and alloys.
- Exposure to engineering development processes such as prototyping, testing, or design‑for‑manufacture desirable.
- Knowledge of DFME and PFMEA.
- Proficiency in CAD software (NX preferred) required.
- Familiarity with FEA tools, ideally ANSYS, to support basic analysis and validation activities.
- Hands‑on approach, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team to take design concepts through to medium‑volume production.
- Self‑motivated, capable of working independently toward defined objectives with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail, with proven problem‑solving skills and a methodical approach to engineering tasks.
- An interest in expanding knowledge across wider mechanical engineering disciplines as part of professional development.
