Learning in Practice Lead

The Learning in Practice Lead is a key education and workforce development role responsible for designing, coordinating and delivering high-quality experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate pharmacy students within clinical practice settings. The post works in partnership with Teesside University, to ensure that placement provision meets the requirements of the GPhC and aligns with national education standards. The post holder will be confident in navigating the Roseberry Park site and will have a good working knowledge of the ward environments, services and multidisciplinary teams. They will be familiar with the pharmacy team and its structure, enabling them to effectively coordinate placements and support learners.

A core aspect of the role involves working collaboratively with university colleagues to develop teaching materials, assessment frameworks and placement models that prepare students for contemporary pharmacy practice. The Learning in Practice Lead will also support the wider pharmacy workforce to adapt to undergraduate training requirements, embedding a strong culture of education, supervision and continuous improvement within the department.

Main duties of the job

• Lead the development of structured placement programmes that enable students to achieve required learning outcomes, including Entrustable Learning Activities, while ensuring patient safety and quality of care remain paramount.
• Develop relationships with local and national university colleagues to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences and expectations for future undergraduate placement provision, and develop a delivery plan of how these can be practically achieved during placements.
• Devise resources, policies and protocols that support high quality entrustable Learning Activities and learning opportunities for students whilst on placement and implement required changes within the pharmacy department to allow for meaningful experiential learning environments for students.
• Support the education and training of the wider pharmacy department, including changes to undergraduate training and coordinate and facilitate students during placements—receiving evaluations and making improvements to the programmes accordingly.

You will work with Pharmacy team colleagues at Teesside University to develop and deliver Learning In Practice teaching and learning materials to MPharm undergraduates, preparing them for their placement experiences and will work with Pharmacy team colleagues at Teesside University to develop and administer competence assessments to MPharm undergraduates, ensuring patient safety is not compromised at any stage of the MPharm programme.

Job responsibilities

• Create, coordinate and deliver placement teaching to undergraduate pharmacy students in line with the university curriculum, including Safe prescribing, Drug History and Medicine reconciliation, and Development of the MPharm programme for undergraduate pharmacy students.
• Contribute to mentoring and supervision of pharmacy students.
• Liaise with universities on matters involving placements.
• Maintain personal teaching skills as part of CPD and engage in the peer observation process.
• Ensure that the teaching time allocated to this role is delivered in a transparent and flexible way.

The role includes coordinating student placements, supporting supervision and mentorship, gathering feedback and evaluation data, and using this insight to iteratively enhance the quality of learning experiences. The post holder will also contribute to workforce planning by strengthening links between education and service delivery, supporting the development of a sustainable future pharmacy workforce.

Person Specification

• Masters degree in Pharmacy or equivalent.
• Member of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
• Postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy.
• Postgraduate qualification in psychiatric pharmacy or willing to work towards it.
• Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
• Postgraduate Pharmacist independent/supplementary prescribing practice certificate.
• Attended Leadership and Management training or have or be studying for a formal Leadership qualification (e.g., NHS LA, CPPE).
• Associate or Full Credentialed Member of College of Mental Health Pharmacists.

Experience

• Experience of mental health pharmacy or Clinical experience in a variety of settings.
• Supervised or managed others; project management experience.

Knowledge

• Confident and articulate communicator both written and verbal.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Understanding of health service issues in primary and secondary care.
• Understanding of the risk issues associated with medicines.
• Critical appraisal skills.
• Use of the Internet to provide useful information and search bibliographic databases.
