Are you looking for a rewarding career in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)? We have an exciting opportunity for a professionally registered clinician to become part of our North Yorkshire, York and Selby (NYYS) CAMHS Crisis team. The NYYS CAMHS Crisis Team is a locality wide service that provides a 24/7 service to young people under the age of 18 and their carers/families in most parts of North Yorkshire, York and Selby (excluding Craven area as this is covered by a different trust).

This postholder will conduct psycho-social assessments for young people experiencing a crisis, creating a robust safety plan with the child, young person and carers to help them return home safely. They will have the skills to work as part of a team, co‑ordinating clinical activities and managing shared caseloads across the locality. The role is fast‑paced, so excellent coordination, organizational skills and the ability to work autonomously are essential. Due to the nature of the role, applicants must be able to travel independently across the whole locality and have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes. This post is for a band 6 Registered Professional who has a keen interest in working with children and young people to help improve their mental health.

Main duties of the job

The main duties include:

• Conducting psycho‑social assessments of the mental health and emotional needs of a young person.
• Conducting thorough risk assessments and formulating a care plan that includes a robust safety plan.
• Working collaboratively with a young person, their carers and other professionals during times of high distress.
• Providing a consistent approach when facing the most challenging clinical situations to deliver safe care to young people and their families/carers.
• Confidently leading the shift and directing junior staff, providing sound clinical decisions in crisis situations to reduce and manage potential risk of harm.
• Communicating effectively with young people, families and other professionals so they receive the right level of support at the right time.
• Offering telephone support to children, young people, carers and other professionals who need advice and guidance around emotional distress and providing strategies to help reduce and manage the risk of harm.
• Possessing experience in mental health services, knowledge of child and adolescent mental health, and a desire to learn new skills.
• Understanding relevant legislation (e.g. MHA, MCA, Children’s Act), detailed knowledge of Safeguarding, Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice.

Job responsibilities

The post requires a shift pattern that includes days and nights over a 7‑day period, covering bank holidays pro‑rata. The candidate will work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team, communicate effectively with others and will be responsible for:

• Working shifts covering 24/7 service provision across NYY locality, with bases in York, Scarborough and Ripon.
• Claiming mileage incurred during working days or using our team pool car.
• Demonstrating good leadership skills to coordinate the day‑to‑day running of a shift.
• Understanding and supporting children’s mental health and emotional wellbeing needs.
• Working well with partner agencies and understanding how services link together to meet the needs of children and young people.
• Providing excellence in clinical care, promoting evidence‑based practice, acting as shift co‑ordinator on a rota basis, ensuring efficient and effective running of the team.
• Recognising signs of harm, abuse and neglect, reporting all such occurrences and taking reasonable steps to protect the young person.
• Identifying and reporting concerns regarding the safeguarding of children at risk of harm.
• Providing support to callers via the national 111 mental health line, conducting full mental health triage and risk assessment for callers aged 16‑18 requiring in‑depth discussion.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Current professional registration with appropriate body in healthcare or social work.
• Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
• Certificate in teaching & assessing in clinical practice as appropriate to own profession.
• 18 months post‑qualifying experience including sign‑off of appropriate preceptorship or competency framework clinical supervisor.
• Recognised sign‑off mentor (or equivalent) or must be achieved within agreed timescale.
• Key skills in literacy, numeracy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent).
• Recognised qualification in a specific model of therapy (e.g. CBT, Family therapy).
• Recognised training in facilitation of parenting groups.

Experience

• Working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers.
• Providing clinical supervision.
• Working in a multi‑disciplinary team.
• Supervising or assessing students on practice placement.
• Significant experience of working with children and young people with mental health in community settings.
• Leadership or management experience.

Knowledge

• Demonstrable knowledge to postgraduate level of evidence‑based practice in caring for patients in the designated field.
• Understanding of relevant legislation (e.g. Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act).
• Care Programme Approach and its application in practice.
• Detailed understanding of safeguarding and its application in practice.
• Clinical risk assessment and management and its application in practice.
• Clinical governance and its application in practice.
• Research and development methodology.

Skills

• Provide leadership and monitor, coordinate and prioritise the activities of the team.
