The Materials Manager is a critical role within the Site Supply Chain Team responsible for co-ordinating activities relating to material control at the Runcorn manufacturing site. To be accountable for the planning, ordering and control of strategic materials (e.g. APIs, primary packaging) in line with best practice material management and procurement principles to align with optimised service, cost and inventory requirements. Provide accurate forecasts to strategic suppliers and assign & review safety stock proposals. To manage & motivate a team of Planner Buyers & Packaging Technology Coordinators who are responsible respectively for planning, ordering and control of secondary packaging materials and for management of artwork change activities at the Runcorn manufacturing site.

How You’ll Spend Your Day

  • Team leadership and supervision: Motivate, coach, and manage the performance of the materials team, coordinating workloads, cross-training and absence handovers and ensuring goals and KPIs are met.
  • Inventory and material management: Manage the planning, procurement and inventory control of strategic materials to fulfil production requirements: Primary packaging materials: syringes, devices and Raw materials: APIs, with adherence to best practice material management and procurement principles. Oversee the procurement and inventory of secondary packaging materials to protect manufacturing continuity whilst balancing cost and inventory requirements. Oversee the management of artwork implementation and change activity executed by the site packaging technology coordinators. Drive adherence to site GR targets, reporting performance to global teams and utilising control reports to manage compliance. Manage material submissions for annual AOP. Manage the obsolescence process in line with MDG principles to ensure preparedness for AOP. Supervise daily activities, ensure efficient workflows, and oversee resolution of discrepancies, returns, and credits.
  • Compliance and safety: Ensure the team follows all relevant working instructions, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and health, safety, and compliance standards. Ensure compliance with global procurement policies and planning procedures.
  • Stakeholder collaboration: Liaise with stakeholders in functional areas (e.g., quality, finance, procurement, Logistics, QC, QA, Operations) and external suppliers to meet material planning requirements and resolve any issues with potential operational impact. Manage strategic supply reviews and KPIs to drive supplier performance improvement including quality & OTIF. Input to supply reviews for secondary packaging, managed by the relevant planner buyer/s.
  • Reporting and data management: Ensure accurate and timely reporting of performance metrics and maintain detailed records of procurement and inventory, reviewing and aligning planning parameters in SAP/APO to provide optimum results.

Your Experience And Qualifications

  • Leadership and people management skills are essential.
  • Background in Pharmaceutical industry experience or FMCG is required.
  • Understanding of end-to-end supply chain, and relevant safety and quality regulations.
  • Relationship management of external suppliers.
  • Proven experience in material management or a related field.
  • Ideally you’d bring expertise of supply of strategic materials APIs/syringes/devices, however this is not an essential skillset.
  • Experience of working with MRP systems: SAP ECC, SAP APO IBP (desirable).
  • Experience of working with quality management systems is essential, ideally Trackwise/Veeva.
  • Ability to identify issues, find solutions and make decisions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration.
