This role based in Harrogate (or potentially Reading or Manchester) is for Coffey Geotechnics, a Tetra Tech Company. Coffey Geotechnics is a specialist consultancy providing geotechnical and engineering geological design services from offices in Harrogate, Manchester and Reading (UK).
About the role:
We are seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join the Coffey Geotechnics team in Reading. The role involves both office-based design and site supervision work for a wide range of size and type of geotechnical projects, working with experienced colleagues both in Reading and across the other Coffey Geotechnics offices. The role would involve working on projects that require detailed design of geotechnical structures, design and specification of ground investigation and earthworks, assessment of slope stability, settlement and ground movement. This includes working on permanent and temporary works for a variety of infrastructure projects both nationally and internationally. Typical market sectors we work in include Highway, Rail, Property, Water, Defence and Energy.
Role responsibilities:
- Undertake technical and non-technical tasks including fieldwork; collating, analysing, interpreting and presenting data; document preparation (reports, proposals, correspondence).
- Contribute to projects with analyses for detailed design of foundations, slopes, retaining walls and many other geotechnical elements, together with assessment of existing structures and design of remedial measures where appropriate.
- Undertake ongoing personal and professional career development.
- Work with junior team members, providing direction and technical guidance where appropriate within the overall control of senior colleagues.
- Effectively plan, coordinate and manage small work programs.
- Contribute to the commercial success of projects.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of positive relationships with clients, sub-consultants and stakeholders.
- Assist senior colleagues in the development and submission of winning proposals.
- Be an ambassador for Coffey in the market; promote our interests and reputation.
- Protect our confidential information and intellectual property.
- Follow our policies, procedures and code of conduct.
- Play an active role in your safety and the safety of others around you.
- Be prepared to contribute to projects with a degree of technical complexity.
- Be prepared to travel on occasion for project related work when required. This could be working from other Coffey offices within the UK or overseas for defined periods of time; or on client sites within the UK or abroad.
Essential Skills:
- Enthusiasm and a keen interest in continually developing your geotechnical consultancy skills.
- Able to apply basic theoretical knowledge of geotechnical engineering and project management principles.
- Proficiency in the use of spreadsheets and FREW, SLIDE, Settle 3D or similar industry standard geotechnical software.
- Familiarity with Eurocode 7 and UK annex design codes, ground investigation and construction contracts and specifications.
- Awareness of the operating model of a specialist consulting business.
- Awareness of how innovative and practical solutions create client value can contribute to new or original techniques in the design.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to present appropriate information in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
- Good interpersonal skills and a strong team focus.
Desirable Skills:
- Proficiency in PLAXIS or other industry standard geotechnical numerical modelling software, or a willingness to learn.
- An understanding of how innovative and practical solutions create client value can contribute to new or original techniques in the design.
- Confidence to be in a client facing role promoting technical capabilities and service offerings to clients.
Relevant Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Engineering Geology or Civil Engineering or similar.
- Postgraduate qualification (MSc, MEng or PhD) in a related field (e.g. engineering geology/geotechnical engineering) is an advantage.
- Chartered or working towards Chartered status through an appropriate professional body.
- Current Drivers Licence.
- CSCSPTS.
