Tetra Tech is seeking talented hydraulic modellers, engineers and environmental scientists to join our growing Water Quality and Coastal Modelling teams in Belfast. We work on a wide range of projects involving water quality assessment, hydrodynamic and coastal modelling, environmental impact assessment, marine consenting, offshore renewable energy, and coastal flood and erosion risk management. This is an opportunity to contribute to technically challenging and environmentally important projects while developing your experience across water, coastal and marine environments. Purpose & Scope of the Role As a Water Quality and Coastal Modelling Consultant, you will support the delivery of numerical modelling, environmental assessment and water management projects. Your work may include coastal modelling of tides, waves, sediment transport and dispersion, as well as water quality assessments involving catchment delineation, rainfall and river-flow modelling, calibration and solution development. You will collect, analyse and interpret hydrological, met-ocean, spatial and environmental data, using the results to support technical reports, Environmental Statement chapters, marine consenting applications and client presentations. You will work closely with engineers, environmental scientists, planners, GIS specialists and project managers to deliver practical and evidence-based solutions. Depending on your experience, you may support defined technical tasks, lead specific work packages or take responsibility for elements of project delivery under the guidance of senior colleagues. Your Impact in this Position In the short term, you will contribute to high-quality modelling, data analysis and technical reporting across live projects. As your experience develops, you will take greater ownership of technical tasks and work packages, contribute to client and stakeholder discussions, and support the delivery of environmental assessments and consenting applications. Over time, you will have the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in water quality, hydraulic, hydrodynamic or coastal modelling and contribute to the growth of Tetra Tech’s water and environmental services across Ireland and the UK. Water Quality and Coastal Modelling You will have knowledge or experience in one or more relevant modelling areas, including water quality, hydraulic, hydrodynamic or coastal modelling. This may include catchment delineation, rainfall and flow boundary generation, river-flow modelling, water quality calibration, tides, waves, sediment transport or dispersion. Data Analysis and Technical Reporting You will be confident working with hydrological, met-ocean, spatial and environmental data. You will be able to organise and quality-check information, identify trends or anomalies, interpret modelling results and present your findings clearly in reports, figures, tables and presentations.Strong attention to detail and the ability to explain technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences are important for this role. Environmental Assessment and Sector Knowledge You will contribute to projects in areas such as water quality assessment, environmental impact assessment, marine consenting, offshore renewable energy, coastal flood and erosion risk management and water environment management. Experience preparing Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Statement chapters or technical consenting documents would be advantageous. Teamwork and Project Delivery You will work collaboratively with environmental scientists, engineers, modellers, planners, GIS specialists, clients, regulators and other stakeholders. You will be able to manage agreed tasks, meet deadlines, respond to feedback and work independently under the guidance of senior staff. More experienced candidates may take responsibility for defined work packages and support the development of less experienced colleagues. Digital Skills and Professional Development You will be proficient in Microsoft Office and willing to develop your skills in relevant modelling, GIS, CAD, coding and data-management tools. Experience with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, MATLAB or Python would be beneficial. A commitment to continuing professional development and, where appropriate, progress towards professional membership or chartership is encouraged. Mandatory Requirements You will hold a degree in a relevant subject such as coastal science, oceanography, coastal or maritime engineering, engineering, geography, environmental science or a related discipline. You must demonstrate strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills, good report-writing ability and proficiency in Microsoft Office. You should be able to work independently under the guidance of senior staff and contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary team. Desirable Experience using MIKE, InfoWorks ICM, Deltares or equivalent modelling software would be beneficial. Experience in water quality, offshore energy, marine development, coastal flooding, erosion risk management or environmental assessment would also be advantageous. Professional membership, progress towards chartership, experience with ArcGIS or AutoCAD, and coding experience in MATLAB or Python would further strengthen your application. Work Patterns and Locations The position is based in a large, permanently desked office located on the edge of the city with on site parking, strong public transport connections and easy access to major road networks. The role supports hybrid working, with an expectation of two to three days per week in the office to facilitate mentoring, collaboration and team coordination. Flexible working arrangements can be accommodated where project responsibilities allow. The multi disciplinary environment provides exposure to a wide range of significant projects, including marine, coastal, regeneration and renewable related developments.
