This is an exciting opportunity for a technically skilled and collaborative structural engineer to take a leading role in the delivery of multidisciplinary building engineering projects. As Senior Structural Engineer, you will work across a diverse portfolio that includes data centres, logistics hubs, energy-from-waste facilities, and transport infrastructure. If you are passionate about structural design, mentoring others, and contributing to innovative, sustainable solutions, this is your chance to make a meaningful impact and help shape the future of engineering at Tetra Tech.
Purpose & Scope of the Role
We are seeking an experienced structural engineer to join our Building Engineering team and lead the design and integration of steel and concrete structures. You will work closely with internal disciplines including architecture, fire, mechanical, and electrical engineering, ensuring that structural solutions are aligned with client requirements and technical specifications. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include mentoring junior staff, attending internal and external meetings, reviewing BIM and CAD outputs, and conducting site visits across the UK. This role demands a proactive approach to problem-solving and technical innovation, with opportunities to influence project outcomes and contribute to knowledge-sharing forums.
Proven Experience in Industrial, Commercial, and Manufacturing Projects
You will bring demonstrable experience in delivering structural engineering solutions for large-scale industrial and commercial developments. This includes data centres, logistics and distribution hubs, energy-from-waste facilities, manufacturing facilities, and transport infrastructure such as aircraft hangars and rail maintenance depots. Your ability to interpret and respond to client-specific technical requirements and integrate structural design with complex processing and manufacturing equipment will be key to ensuring operational functionality and long-term resilience.
Technical Expertise in Steel and Concrete Structural Engineering
You will have deep and practical knowledge of steel and concrete design, with the ability to carry out detailed structural analysis, produce calculations, and review BIM and CAD drawings with precision. Experience with industry-standard design software such as Tekla Structural Designer is essential. You will demonstrate a robust understanding of how steel and concrete systems behave under varied loading and environmental conditions. Your awareness of embodied carbon and Whole Life Carbon Assessments will support our commitment to low-carbon construction and sustainable design.
Credible Participation in Internal and External Meetings
Strong communication and interpersonal skills are vital for this role. You will regularly lead internal technical meetings, contribute to design reviews, and provide informed input during client and contractor discussions. While external meetings may not always be led by you, your presence must add value through technical insight and collaborative engagement. Your ability to articulate engineering concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders will be key to building trust and ensuring project alignment.
Mentorship and Collaborative Teamworking
You will play an active role in mentoring and developing junior team members, including graduates and technicians. You will foster a supportive learning environment, share knowledge, and guide others towards chartership. Collaboration is central to our team’s ethos, and you will thrive in a multidisciplinary setting, working closely with colleagues across architecture, planning, building services, and environmental disciplines. Your willingness to challenge ideas constructively and contribute to technical forums and lessons-learned sessions will be highly valued.
Delivery of Multidisciplinary Building Engineering Projects
You will be comfortable working across the full spectrum of building project delivery, from structural frames to external works and drainage systems. Our team delivers projects holistically, offering a broad and enriching experience. Your ability to understand and coordinate with other disciplines will ensure that designs are fully integrated and meet client expectations. A mindset geared towards continuous improvement, technical curiosity, and a desire to learn something new every day will be essential for success in this dynamic and challenging environment.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
You will hold a master’s degree in Civil and/or Structural Engineering accredited by the ICE and/or IStructE. Completion of relevant IPD requirements and Chartered status, or being on the route towards chartership, is highly desirable. You will have strong practical experience and technical skills, with a portfolio of successfully delivered projects and a commitment to professional development.
