Tetra Tech is looking for an Ecological Clerk of Works to join us in shaping the future of ecological delivery. We have opportunities available across Scotland including Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Join our collaborative Ecology team to support some of Scotland’s most exciting renewable energy, residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. This is an opportunity to play a hands-on role in protecting biodiversity while helping clients deliver projects safely, compliantly, and efficiently.

As an Ecological Clerk of Works, you will provide day-to-day ecological supervision and monitoring on large-scale construction and development sites across Scotland. You will help ensure ecological mitigation, protection measures, and site controls are implemented effectively, while supporting contractors, clients, and project teams with practical, proportionate solutions. The role supports a wide range of ecological services for renewable energy, residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects, including onshore elements of major wind developments, as well as onshore wind and solar schemes. You will contribute to compliant project delivery by carrying out site inspections, supervising ecological surveys, maintaining accurate records, and responding to unexpected ecological issues on site.

You will help shape successful project delivery by protecting ecological interests while keeping works moving in a practical and compliant way. Your contribution will support regional and national project success, strengthen client confidence, and help maintain the organisation’s reputation for technical quality, innovation, and sustainable outcomes. You will also play an important mentoring role, supporting junior ECoWs and technicians, sharing knowledge, and helping build capability within the wider ecology team.

Technical Expertise

  • Apply strong ecological knowledge and field-based experience to deliver effective site supervision, make sound decisions on site, and support protected species and mitigation requirements.

Project Management

  • Support the delivery of ecological works across small to medium scale projects, maintaining quality, managing priorities, and contributing to site reporting, compliance, and practical problem-solving.

Innovation

  • Use modern tools and progressive approaches to improve delivery, including digital data capture and mapping, and contribute to continuous improvement in ecological site practice.

Client Engagement

  • Build positive working relationships with clients, contractors, statutory bodies, and other stakeholders through clear communication, professionalism, and proactive site support.

Team Support and Development

  • Mentor junior colleagues where required, contribute to a collaborative team culture, and help support equipment, training, and knowledge-sharing activities.

Qualifications & Experience Expected

  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Associate membership of CIEEM, or ability to apply for membership.
  • CSCS card.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Proven experience as an Ecological Clerk of Works, or in a similar ecological consultancy role.
  • Strong practical field skills and good knowledge of UK wildlife legislation.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work independently on site and make rapid, defensible decisions.

Beneficial

  • 4x4 training.
  • First aid training.
  • Experience supporting licensed works.
  • Equivalent work experience may be considered where appropriate.

This is a site-based role working across Scotland, so you should expect regular travel and periods away from home. The role will involve working on construction and development sites, liaising with contractors and clients, and carrying out ecological supervision in changing site conditions. You should be prepared for flexible working patterns aligned to project needs. A hybrid approach may be possible for non-site-based tasks, but the role will primarily require time on site and travel between project locations.

In alignment with the Equality Act 2010, we will make reasonable adjustments to support candidates and employees requiring additional arrangements. This could include adaptations to work schedules, training approaches, or the physical workspace. Please inform us if you need any accommodations during the recruitment process in your day-to-day role.
