We are looking for an experienced Principal Traffic Signals Engineer to join our growing highways and transportation team in the Midlands. This is an excellent opportunity for a traffic signals professional who can combine strong technical expertise with leadership, project management and the ability to build trusted relationships with clients, stakeholders and colleagues. You will contribute to complex traffic signal and transport projects across the UK, working with public- and private-sector clients on schemes ranging from early-stage studies and feasibility work through to detailed design, implementation and post-implementation validation. The Role As Principal Traffic Signals Engineer, you will take technical responsibility for a diverse portfolio of projects. You will work with local authorities, developers, contractors and other transport professionals to develop effective solutions for urban traffic management, junction improvement and sustainable transport schemes.
- Leading the design and delivery of traffic signal and intelligent transport projects.
- Providing technical direction, mentoring and support to engineers and technicians.
- Managing project scope, programmes, budgets, risks and technical quality.
- Preparing and reviewing traffic signal designs, specifications, reports and technical drawings.
- Developing junction improvement schemes, including signalised junctions, pedestrian crossings and network optimisation.
- Applying relevant UK standards, legislation and best practice, including the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions, the Traffic Signs Manual and appropriate local authority requirements.
- Advising clients on traffic signal control, network management and technology options.
- Working with signal suppliers, contractors and commissioning teams to support construction, Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing.
- Supporting the post-implementation validation of traffic signal junctions and networks.
- Reviewing traffic data, modelling outputs and operational performance to inform design decisions.
- Building strong working relationships with internal teams, local authorities, contractors and other project stakeholders.
- Promoting innovation, sustainability, safety and best practice across our traffic engineering services.
- You will be an established traffic signals professional with experience in the design, delivery and management of traffic signal projects.
- A degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, transport planning, traffic engineering or a related discipline.
- Professional experience in traffic signals, intelligent transport systems or traffic engineering.
- Proven experience leading the delivery of complex traffic signal projects.
- Strong knowledge of UK traffic signal design principles, equipment and control strategies.
- Experience working with local authorities, consultants, contractors or traffic signal product manufacturers.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Autodesk products, such as KeySIGNALS and KeyLINES.
- Experience with local junction modelling software, such as LinSig and/or TRANSYT.
- Experience with traffic signal control and optimisation systems, such as UTC, MOVA and/or SCOOT.
- Experience producing or reviewing technical reports, drawings, specifications and scheme documentation.
- A strong understanding of relevant UK standards, guidance and legislation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining high standards of technical quality.
- A proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving.
- A full UK driving licence.
- Professional membership of a relevant organisation, such as the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation or the Institution of Highway Engineers, would be advantageous.
- As a transport engineering consultancy, we are also keen to hear about additional experience you can bring to the role. This could include other forms of traffic or transport modelling, development planning, traffic impact assessment, transport planning or broader civil engineering experience.
