Are you passionate about delivering high quality patient centred care in a well-equipped and established Day Surgery Department? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Theatre Assistant (Bank) to join our committed clinical team in the Day Surgery Unit. The hospital comprises of a well-equipped theatre & purpose-built procedure room, outpatients department, minor injury and illness unit and x-ray. You will be working with a compassionate team committed to delivering the best in care and rated Good by the Care Quality Commission. As we continue to expand the services we offer, we are seeking a Theatre Assistant on a zero hour contract basis.
Main duties of the job
- The Theatre Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the surgical team by ensuring a clean, safe, and well-prepared environment for surgical procedures.
- This position involves transporting patients, preparing operating room, maintaining sterile conditions, and assisting with equipment and supply management.
- The Theatre Assistant works closely with nurses, surgeons, anaesthetist, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate efficient and effective surgical care.

Job responsibilities
- Prepare operating rooms before surgeries by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
- Assist in positioning and transporting patients to and from the operating room.
- Maintain cleanliness and sterility of the Operating Theatre by cleaning and disinfecting rooms and equipment after procedures.
- Ensure proper disposal of biohazardous materials and adherence to infection control protocols.
- Restock supplies and surgical instruments as needed.
- Assist with the safe handling and transport of specimens to the laboratory.
- Support the surgical team during procedures as directed, including passing instruments and holding retractors (if trained and permitted).
- Monitor and maintain inventory of surgical supplies and equipment.
- Respond promptly to requests from surgical staff during procedures.
- Adhere to hospital policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift/move patients and equipment.
Qualifications
- GCSES or equivalent in English and Maths.
- Previous experience in a healthcare or surgical setting preferred but not essential.
- Knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection control practices is a plus.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.

- Flexibility: Ability to provide support and cover for periods of annual leave and sickness.
- Communication Skills: Can verbalise a caring attitude. Clear communication skills both oral and written. Note patient progress in the nursing care evaluation. Participation in meetings.
- Qualifications: Good Basic Education. Able to demonstrate clear transferable skills valid to the health care setting. Willing to work towards NVQ level 2, or equivalent. NVQ level 2 in Health Care, or equivalent. ECDL.
- Experience: Ability to work under instruction and within a team. Ensure that relevant information/files are easily accessed by all members of the team. To understand stock rotation methodology. Self-motivation/initiative. Experience of participation within a team in care monitoring, audit and evaluation fundamentals of care. Able to undertake and accurately chart simple observations: Temperature, Pulse, Respiration, Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose Monitoring, Fluid input/output monitoring, Bowel Motions, Dietary intake. Able to undertake ECG recordings. Able to take patient samples: Urine, Faeces, Blood, MRSA swabs.
- Other: Can demonstrate an understanding of Health and Safety issues. Ability to manage stressful situations in self. Confident in assisting Qualified Nurses / ODPs and consultants to prepare and support patients undergoing surgery whilst maintaining privacy and dignity at all times.
