We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Lecturer in Maths (Functional Skills) to join our team in providing maternity cover on a fixed term basis at Sandwell College. This is an exciting opportunity for an inspiring educator to deliver high-quality Functional Skills Maths teaching to learners of varying abilities and help them develop the essential skills needed for employment, further study, and personal progression.
As a Lecturer, you will deliver engaging lessons, support learners to achieve their targets, and contribute to the continuous improvement of teaching and learning. You will work closely with colleagues to ensure learners receive a high-quality educational experience while maintaining accurate records and supporting programme development.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging and high-quality Functional Skills Maths (Entry Level to Level 1) teaching to learners of varying ability
- Plan and prepare schemes of work, lesson materials, and assessments in line with awarding body requirements
- Use Information Learning Technology (ILT) and multimedia resources to enhance the learning experience
- Assess and mark learner work promptly, providing constructive feedback to support progress
- Act as a course tutor, supporting learners to achieve their targets and monitoring their progress
- Administer and invigilate examinations in line with awarding body and JCQ regulations
- Maintain accurate learner records and contribute to programme administration
- Participate in curriculum planning, team meetings, and standardisation activities
- Contribute to the development and improvement of the curriculum provision
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners to support learner success
- Working up to two evenings per week, is essential
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Degree in Mathematics or a related subject
- Teaching qualification (Certificate in Education or Level 5 teaching qualification)
- Experience delivering and assessing Functional Skills Maths (ideally in a Further Education setting)
- Understanding of assessment processes, initial assessment, and internal verification procedures
- Ability to prepare engaging learning materials and adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learner needs
- Strong organisational, administrative, and communication skills
- Confident using ILT to support teaching and learning
- Ability to motivate and inspire learners to achieve their potential
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusive education
- Experience of teaching ESOL learners or the ability to adapt teaching, learning materials and delivery to support learners with English as an additional language
Teaching Qualifications & Salary Banding
To be eligible for our Qualified Lecturer salary banding (£31,837 - £48,160), you must hold one of the following teaching qualifications:
- DTTLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
- Certificate in Education
- PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
- ProfGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education)
- DET (Diploma in Education and Training)
- DiT (Diploma in Teaching) – if for a vocational subject
If you do not hold one of the above qualifications, you will fall into our Unqualified Lecturer salary banding (£26,661 - £29,998).
