We are seeking a passionate and committed Lecturer in English to join our team at Sandwell College on a full-time, permanent basis. This is an excellent opportunity to make a real impact by supporting students to develop the essential literacy skills they need for further study, employment, and everyday life. As a Lecturer in English (Functional Skills), you will deliver high-quality teaching to learners across a range of programmes, helping them to build confidence and competence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. You will play a key role in improving student outcomes, contributing to curriculum development, and creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment that supports all learners to achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills English lessons
  • Develop and adapt learning materials to meet diverse learner needs
  • Assess student work and provide constructive feedback
  • Monitor and track student progress to support achievement and retention
  • Maintain accurate academic and administrative records
  • Act as a personal tutor, providing academic and pastoral support
  • Contribute to curriculum development and quality improvement
  • Use ILT and digital tools to enhance teaching and learning
  • Participate in team meetings, CPD, and college events

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • A degree or relevant qualification in English or a related subject
  • Teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one)
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills or GCSE English
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to motivate and inspire learners of varying abilities
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and safeguarding

Desirable

  • Experience working in a Further Education setting
  • Knowledge of current Functional Skills curriculum and assessment
  • Experience supporting learners with additional needs

Teaching Qualifications & Salary Banding

To be eligible for our Qualified Lecturer salary banding (£31,837 - £48,160), you must hold one of the following teaching qualifications:

  • DTTLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
  • Certificate in Education
  • PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
  • ProfGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education)
  • DET (Diploma in Education and Training)
  • DiT (Diploma in Teaching) – if for a vocational subject

If you do not hold one of the above qualifications, you will fall into our Unqualified Lecturer salary banding (£26,661 - £29,998).
