ESOL Tutor (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
Reports To: Curriculum Manager / Programme Manager / Head of Adult Learning
Salary: £25,000 - £40,000 per annum (pro rata if part-time), depending on qualifications and experience
Job Purpose
To deliver high-quality ESOL teaching and learning programmes that enable learners whose first language is not English to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. The ESOL Tutor will support learners to achieve their educational, employment, and personal goals while promoting inclusion, confidence, and progression.
Key Responsibilities
- Teaching and Learning
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging ESOL lessons for learners at various levels, including Pre‑Entry, Entry Level, Level 1, and Level 2.
- Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that meets the diverse needs of learners.
- Differentiating teaching methods and resources to accommodate varying language abilities and learning styles.
- Develop learners' English language skills across speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
- Embed literacy, numeracy, digital skills, employability, and British Values within teaching where appropriate.
- Assessment and Progress Monitoring
- Conduct initial assessments and diagnostic assessments to identify learner needs and starting points.
- Set individual learning goals and monitor learner progress.
- Carry out formative and summative assessments in accordance with awarding body requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, achievement, and assessment outcomes.
- Prepare learners for accredited ESOL qualifications and examinations where applicable.
- Learner Support
- Provide guidance, encouragement and pastoral support to learners.
- Identify barriers to learning and work with support services to promote learner success.
- Encourage learner participation, confidence and independent learning.
- Support learners in progressing to further education, training, volunteering or employment opportunities.
- Curriculum Development
- Contribute to the development and review of ESOL programmes and learning materials.
- Ensure lessons remain relevant, engaging and responsive to learner needs.
- Use a range of teaching resources and technologies to enhance learning outcomes.
- Quality Assurance and Compliance
- Comply with organisational policies and procedures, including safeguarding, equality and diversity, health and safety and data protection.
- Participate in lesson observations, quality reviews and self‑assessment processes.
- Maintain accurate learner documentation and funding‑related records where required.
- Contribute to achieving quality standards and performance targets.
- Professional Development
- Participate in staff meetings, training and continuous professional development activities.
- Keep up to date with ESOL teaching methodologies, curriculum developments and awarding body requirements.

Essential Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent qualification.
- Teaching qualification such as: Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET), or PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent teaching qualification.
- ESOL specialist qualification or recognised ESOL teaching experience.
Essential Experience
- Experience teaching ESOL learners in further education, adult learning, community learning or similar settings.
- Experience assessing learner progress and maintaining accurate records.
- Experience working with learners from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Knowledge and Understanding
- Understanding of ESOL curriculum frameworks and assessment requirements.
- Knowledge of inclusive teaching and learning practices.
- Understanding of safeguarding, equality, diversity and learner support requirements.
- Aware of barriers faced by adult learners and migrant communities.
Skills and Attributes
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
