Academic Skills Coach – English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Role Overview
The Academic Skills Coach – English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is responsible for coordinating the delivery of the University’s EAP provision and providing high‑quality academic skills coaching that enables students to achieve their full academic potential. The postholder plans, coordinates, delivers, and continuously enhances EAP provision, ensuring academic language support is responsive to student needs and aligned with programme and institutional objectives. They design and deliver EAP classes, workshops, and embedded academic language support to develop students’ academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, alongside critical thinking, research, academic integrity, and independent learning. The role is central to the School’s approach to promoting the highest standards of Academic Integrity and supporting a diverse cohort of international students to understand and embody these standards.
Key Responsibilities
EAP Teaching and Delivery
- Plan, prepare, and deliver high‑quality EAP classes and academic language support sessions for students from diverse linguistic and educational backgrounds.
- Design and deliver teaching that develops students’ academic English proficiency across reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills required for successful study in higher education.
- Support students in developing discipline‑specific academic communication skills, including academic writing conventions, critical reading, seminar participation, presentations, research communication, and academic vocabulary development.
- Assess students’ English language and academic communication skills, providing constructive feedback and targeted interventions to support continuous improvement.
Student Academic Development
- Provide one‑to‑one academic skills coaching to support the development of academic confidence, resilience, and effective learning strategies.
- Support students in understanding academic expectations within UK higher education, including academic integrity, critical thinking, independent learning, and scholarly communication.
- Assist students in developing effective study habits, time management, organisation, goal setting, and self‑regulation skills.
- Identify barriers to academic success and develop personalised action plans to support students at risk of under‑performance, withdrawal, or disengagement.
Workshop and Resource Development
- Deliver workshops and embedded academic language support in collaboration with academic programmes to enhance student engagement, attainment, and progression.
- Develop and adapt EAP teaching materials, lesson plans, learning activities, and assessment resources that align with programme learning outcomes and student needs.
- Create engaging and accessible learning resources, guidance materials, and digital content to support student learning.
- Work collaboratively with the academic team on the integration of Academic Skills into the wider curriculum.
Student Success and Retention
- Use student data and feedback to identify trends, evaluate interventions, and inform continuous improvement activities.
- Proactively engage with students identified through institutional processes as requiring additional academic support.
- Support the development and delivery of needs‑analysis tools to ensure support is responsive to individual student strengths.
Partnership Working
- Collaborate with academic, careers, and student experience staff to identify language‑related barriers to learning and develop strategies that support student success and retention.
Quality and Compliance
- Contribute to the evaluation and continuous enhancement of EAP provision through analysis of student outcomes, feedback, and sector best practice.
- Monitor student attendance, participation, and academic progress within EAP provision, identifying students requiring additional support and implementing appropriate interventions.
General Responsibilities
- Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of practice.
- Undertake other duties commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post as reasonably required.
About You
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional qualification.
- Relevant qualification in education, learning development, coaching, teaching, or a related discipline (e.g., DELTA, DipTESOL, MA TESOL, MA Applied Linguistics, PGCE).
- Postgraduate qualification in Education, Learning Development, Coaching, Psychology, or a related field.
- Working experience in an EAP or related environment.
- Desirable: experience working in higher education with international students.
