Monumental is automating on-site construction with cutting-edge robotics and software. Our mission is to redefine construction through software and robots. We aim for a future where beautiful, bespoke buildings are built within a single day with minimal labor. Our company is on a real rocket ship trajectory, with extremely strong customer demand forcing us to scale the team as fast as we can today. We’ve proven that our technology and operational model works in the Netherlands, and are ready to scale as fast as we can in the UK. We’re a growing team (about 100 team members) of mostly engineers and technicians, coming from companies like Palantir, Qualcomm, Dyson, Shopify, Tesla, Meta and 1X. It’s still the early days of building the company, and this is a unique opportunity to be an early employee in a high-growth, high-ambition startup environment. From Day 1, you’ll be able to work with an experienced founding team backed by top-tier investors.

About The Role

We’re looking for an extremely entrepreneurial operator. You’ll be our first Country Manager ever, and the UK is the first country we’re expanding to, so this is not a role where you’ll follow some playbook to establish a new market – you’re going to figure out and write the playbook yourself, the hard and complicated way. Monumental is unique in that we’re completely vertically-integrated. We design and build our own hardware and software, manufacture the robots in-house, and deploy them on construction sites ourselves with our own team, operating as a subcontractor. If the prospect of deploying cutting-edge technology in an operationally complex environment that hasn’t seen change for over a century, while doing sales and building up a local team, doesn’t daunt you, then you should definitely read on and apply.

This is going to be an extremely high-impact role, with a large amount of autonomy and day-to-day variation. You’ll get high-level goals but no one will tell you what to do or manage you on a daily basis.

What You’ll Achieve In Your First Year

  • Figure out how to go from small construction pilot deployments to ongoing commercial deployments, and then scale to multiple concurrent deployments. We expect you to act as the initial Deployment Manager in the UK so you can build up enough tacit knowledge before scaling up.
  • Ensure there is always more than sufficient demand for our product. Our sales tends to be low-lift work, but you should still be excellent at it and always have the feeling that you’re short on supply to meet the demand you’ve generated.
  • Hire, onboard, and manage a local team of robot and deployment operators that will operate our robots and other tasks on construction sites. We’re planning to seed the UK team with members from our Dutch team so you can hit the ground running and have an easier time bootstrapping Monumental’s unique culture in a new location.
  • Manage our fleet of robots and figure out with the rest of the HQ team how to manage our first remote fleet.
  • Set up whatever local facilities will be needed in the UK, from a small office to a potential storage/maintenance hub.
  • Stand up the required legal structure for us to operate and scale in the UK. This includes setting up local entities, navigating local employment laws, and all other relevant regulation. You’re comfortable navigating complicated questions that involve new technology in old industries and liaising with the right counsel when needed.

Must haves

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in a chaotic, entrepreneurial, high-growth, unstructured environment. This could be as a startup founder, GM, sales, operations, business development or a similar area where you’ve seen rapid growth, and where we don’t need to explain to you why grit and resilience are important character traits for this role.
  • A strong bias-to-action and getting-shit-done mentality with the required tenacity and speed. The emphasis of this role is execution, not making decks.
  • You’re able to context-switch from strategic work to very practical work throughout the day, and nothing feels beneath you. There will be days where in the morning you’re literally getting your feet dirty, helping carry mortar on a construction site, while interviewing senior candidates in the afternoon.
  • A strong strategic business sense. You have proven experience doing sales, pricing, negotiations, and account management. You’re comfortable being responsible for the P&L of your deployments and the entire UK operation.
  • You’re an excellent communicator. You need to be comfortable chatting with people from all over the construction industry, from billionaire real estate developers to junior tradesmen on the construction site.
  • You have experience hiring and managing a team and you understand the importance of filtering for and instilling the right culture. You’ll be responsible for hiring the initial team in the UK.
  • Raw intellectual horsepower and eagerness to learn. We expect this role to have a steep learning curve whatever your background, and this role might in practice feel like a completely new job every 3-6 months.
  • Willingness for frequent travel between the UK and the Netherlands. We expect you to spend a significant amount in the Netherlands in the first 3-6 months for onboarding and immersion, and then likely some travel cadence after.
  • A child-like excitement and optimism to be building the future, with robots, that will build houses for people to live in.
