At Tesco we offer an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Networks Engineer to join our ambitious team. This role is based in Welwyn Garden City (or London) and is central to our mission of delivering world-class e-commerce experiences. You will be part of a dynamic team crafting, developing, and implementing pioneering network solutions that support our global operations. Responsibilities
- Representing Infrastructure/Systems Engineering across all of Tesco Technology and with suppliers.
- Balancing outstanding delivery for customers with the needs of the business.
- Acting as an expert and often the first layer of management of people or projects.
- Crafting, developing, and delivering solutions using existing infrastructure components.
- Implementing new infrastructure technologies and establishing standard methodologies for their adoption.
- Initiating strategic resolutions to problems and inspiring change to ensure seamless future operations.
- Contributing to the Technology Roadmap for Tesco Technology Data Centres.
- Evaluating new tools and techniques to understand their value and impact.
- Leading group design discussions and presenting with authority to various audiences.
- Collaborating with Software Engineers to understand their requirements and assist in consuming infrastructure seamlessly.
- Demonstrating leadership qualities by coaching and mentoring junior system engineers.
- Ensuring high-quality design standards and understanding impacts on other infrastructure areas.
- Keeping technical skills up to date and tracking new technologies to benefit the Technology team and broader Tesco.
- Introducing automation to all aspects of day-to-day work.
Skills and Experience Required
- Experience crafting and deploying solutions for large, sophisticated global organisation.
- An analytical and structured approach to craft, process, and advanced troubleshooting.
- The ability to understand Tesco Technology and business strategies and convert them into innovative technology roadmaps.
- Proficiency in producing and maintaining high-quality HLD/LLD and Standards documentation.
- A well-organised, self-starting attitude with personal ownership and accountability in project life cycles.
- The ability to build and maintain positive relationships within and across teams.
- Technical leadership skills and the ability to mentor individuals.
- Effective communication skills for delivering and presenting designs, strategies, and concepts to senior and junior staff alike.
- A dedication to staying current with the latest industry technologies and supplier solutions like SDN and SDWAN.
Required Technology Skills
Applicants should possess at least three of the following:
- Expertise in designing/building and operating large-scale, multilayer switching and routing using current Arista/Juniper/Cisco equipment in WAN and LAN environments.
- Knowledge of wide-area networking technologies and protocols, such as MPLS and WAN Optimisation (Riverbed Steelhead or Cisco WAS).
- Technical knowledge of the ISO/OSI network model, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, IGRP), DNS, DHCP, IP Address Management, and TCP/UDP Port RFC & IEEE 802-based standards.
- Experience with Cisco/Arista switches deployed in Spine/Leaf topology.
- Knowledge of cloud networking β MS Azure, AWS.
- High levels of VPN experience and associated technologies and protocols.
- Knowledge of load balancing & global/DNS balancing technologies, preferably F5 hardware and/or software appliances.
- Understanding of internet/web technologies both hardware and cloud-based.
- Understanding of network management technologies and protocols such as SNMP, NetFlow, IPSLA, and network management & alerting tools.
Desired Technical Skills
- Knowledge of firewall platforms and technologies, including build/configuration of Palo Alto, Cisco ASA/FirePower, Checkpoint, and Fortinet.
- Experience with remote access and two-factor authentication technologies and AAA solutions.
- Knowledge of threat prevention and detection techniques and associated technologies.
- Familiarity with SDN/automation technologies/configuration tools like GIT, Chef, Ansible, or Puppet.Experience with the latest 802.11-based Wi-Fi standards and technologies.
- Scripting knowledge (Python, Unix/Linux, or PowerShell & Batch).Familiarity with VMware NSX and the wider VMware software stack.
