As an Android Developer, you will sit within the Engineering chapter working collaboratively with other Developers and Software / QA Engineers. At Tesco Mobile, we empower our customers to seamlessly manage their products and services through native mobile applications on both iOS and Android platforms. Our Mobile App squad is a diverse and agile team, including iOS and Android Developers, a Product Owner, Business Analysts, QA Engineers, and more, all working together to shape, build and deliver outstanding mobile experiences that delight our customers.
About the role:
In this role, you will have the chance to create, code, and implement customised solutions that elevate our Tesco Mobile Android app to new heights. Your expertise will play a crucial role in improving our mobile app by introducing new features and custom functionalities. Working in collaboration with cross‑functional teams, you will deliver high‑quality solutions that meet our ambitious business goals!
You will be responsible for:
- Designing, developing, and maintaining Android features using Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and modern Android UI components.
- Working within established architectural patterns, contributing to scalable, modular, and maintainable Android app components.
- Collaborating with cross‑functional team members—including Product Owners, Business Analysts, QA Engineers, and other developers—to deliver high‑quality features.
- Integrating the Android application with RESTful APIs and backend systems.
- Ensuring strong app performance through profiling, debugging, and performance optimisation across a wide range of Android devices.
- Writing clean, testable, and maintainable code while contributing to unit testing and UI testing practices.
- Participating in code reviews, providing constructive feedback and promoting consistent coding standards across the Android codebase.
- Staying current with the latest Android platform updates, Jetpack libraries, tools, and best practices to support ongoing app improvements.
You will need:
- Minimum 4 years of hands‑on Android development using Kotlin.
- Experience with Jetpack Compose and Android UI development, with a good understanding of the latest Android platform features.
- Knowledge of MVVM or other modern Android architecture patterns.
- Experience integrating Android applications with RESTful APIs and backend services.
- Proficiency in writing and maintaining unit tests, with a good understanding of testable Android architecture.
- Understanding of push notifications (FCM), offline storage, concurrency, and performance optimisation across diverse Android devices.
- Good knowledge of Material Design guidelines and the broader Android ecosystem.
- Proficient with Git and collaborative development workflows.
- Strong problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
Bonus but not essential:
- Experience or flexibility with cross-platform development (e.g., Kotlin, Android, or frameworks like Flutter/React Native) is highly advantageous and welcomed.
