Job Overview
The role
Emanuel School has a unique opportunity for a dynamic theatre practitioner to inspire young performers and help shape our exciting and ambitious drama provision as Theatre Director.
You will play a central role in the delivery of our vibrant co-curricular and academic drama programmes, with a particular focus on directing our annual musical – next year’s production of Into the Woods. Rehearsals will run from September to March and will involve close collaboration with our Assistant Director of Music, Technical Manager, and a team of external professionals including a choreographer, lighting designer, sound engineer and musicians.
Beyond the musical, you will support GCSE and A Level students with devised and scripted performances, as well as leading workshops and organising theatre visits and enrichment opportunities. There is also the exciting prospect of directing a production for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with the creative freedom to select the piece and explore innovative elements or mediums. You will work with a dedicated cast of students in an intensive rehearsal process in the lead-up to the June previews and festival.
We are looking for a confident and organised individual with a strong background in directing and a deep passion for musical theatre. You will possess previous experience of developing and directing drama productions and musical theatre and be confident in your ability to manage large-scale productions. A solid understanding of technical theatre, including lighting, sound and set design, is also essential.
