Overview

The successful candidate will be a native-level speaker of French, able to enthuse students across the College to develop their aptitude within the language. The role is ideal for those interested in a career in teaching, with the opportunity to receive dedicated mentoring from the Head of MFL. The Foreign Language Assistant will work with students both individually and in small groups in order to concentrate primarily on their oral aptitude and increase fluency, accuracy, and confidence with conversational French. They will produce learning materials and resources appropriate for the level of French of those students, working collaboratively with the classroom teacher and wider departmental colleagues. At GCSE and A Level, clear knowledge of the examination requirements is vital, as is the effective giving of feedback and checking of progress made by students. It is envisaged that the Foreign Language Assistant will work closely with our A Level students at Sixth Form, meeting them once per week individually for intensive French tuition. In addition to the opportunities outlined above to support teachers and students with their learning of French within the curriculum, the successful candidate will promote French beyond the classroom, leading clubs, societies, or wider activities to engage students in subjects of wider interest about France and French studies in general. As far as working days are concerned, the school is willing to offer flexibility to adapt to the successful candidate’s needs.

Employment will be conditional upon the College being satisfied with the result of the Enhanced DBS check and the outcome of all other checks. The College will also carry out a check of the Children’s Barred List on the successful applicant. Applicants should be aware that it is unlawful for the College to employ anyone to work with children if they are barred from doing so, and it is a criminal offence for a person to apply to work with children if they are barred from doing so. This role is also exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the College is therefore permitted to ask shortlisted applicants to declare all convictions and cautions (including those which are \”spent\” unless they are \”protected\” under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.
