Purpose of the Role
At Academics, we are looking for a science technician to support the effective delivery of science education within a school in Tunbridge Wells by preparing practical materials, maintaining laboratories and equipment, ensuring health and safety compliance, and assisting teaching staff in creating a stimulating and safe learning environment for pupils.
Key Responsibilities
- Practical Preparation & Lesson Support
- Prepare, set up, and clear away materials and equipment for science lessons across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
- Support teachers during practical sessions when required, including demonstrations of equipment use.
- Develop and trial practical activities and resources to support curriculum delivery.
- Laboratory Management
- Maintain laboratories, prep rooms, and storage areas to a high standard of cleanliness and organisation.
- Ensure accurate stock control of chemicals, consumables, and equipment; place orders as needed in consultation with the Head of Science.
- Carry out routine calibration, testing, and maintenance of equipment.
Person Specification
Essential
- Experience working in a laboratory environment (school, industrial, or academic).
- Good scientific knowledge across at least one discipline (biology, chemistry, or physics).
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage workloads independently.
- Understanding of laboratory safety and safe handling of equipment and chemicals.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Desirable
- Previous experience as a school science technician.
- A relevant science qualification (A-levels, BTEC, or degree-level).
- Familiarity with CLEAPSS guidance and school laboratory procedures.
- Ability to contribute to extracurricular STEM activities.
