I’m currently supporting a major public sector digital programme that is looking for an experienced Senior Developer to join their engineering team. This is an opportunity to work on large-scale, meaningful services used across health and social care, contributing to both greenfield development and the modernisation of existing digital platforms.
The environment is collaborative, user-focused and aligned to GDS-style delivery, with an emphasis on open working, high engineering standards and transparent decision-making.
Role overview- Designing and building secure, reliable backend services in Python, following TDD and automated testing practices
- Developing front-end features using React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript tooling
- Delivering cloud-native solutions on AWS, working with services such as Lambda, API Gateway, ECS and RDS
- Working closely with product, design, research and engineering teams in an agile, multidisciplinary setting
- Contributing to CI/CD pipelines, DevOps automation and infrastructure-as-code
- Participating in code reviews, technical discussions and continuous improvement initiatives
- Supporting open documentation and transparent version-controlled design choices
- Balancing new feature delivery with the ongoing improvement of existing services
- Strong hands-on experience with Python for production services (FastAPI, Django or similar)
- Solid experience working with React and modern frontend development patterns
- Proven AWS capability, ideally across both serverless and containerised workloads
- Strong understanding of CI/CD, automated testing, code quality and DevOps practices
- Experience within the public sector, GDS-aligned teams or large enterprise environments is highly desirable
- Ability to collaborate effectively within an agile, multidisciplinary team
- A focus on engineering quality, clear communication and user-centred delivery
- Familiarity with the government design frameworks
- Experience with Terraform, CDK or other infrastructure-as-code tools
- Exposure to legacy technologies such as Java or .NET (not essential)
